Run Granny Run
by I can’t say I’m sad to hear the news this morning that Republican Senator Judd Gregg has changed his mind on his expected appointment as commerce secretary in Obama’s new regime. A few weeks back my wife and I watched the wonderful documentary, Run Granny Run, which charted the remarkable story of Doris ‘Granny D’ Haddock, who at the age of 94, became the Democrat nominee in New Hampshire, running against the incumbent, wait for it, Judd Gregg. And she gave him one hell of a fright, too, walking across the State to raise awareness for her campaign and very nearly wiping the condescending smugness off his face, in the processing throwing down the gauntlet on a platform of ‘change’ and ‘transparency’.

I’ve long been a fan of Brooklyn artist Katy Horan. With a folksy old west, native american aesthetic, Horan creates paintings rich with narrative, like old campfire stories, come to life. Having recently opened her first solo show at the Anno Domini Gallery in San Jose, Horan has created a haunting new body of work filled with abstract lacy patterns and narratives that will most definitely hit your storytime sweet spot.
New York-based Japanese artist Shusaku Arakawa designed this small apartment block in 2005 in the Tokyo suburb of Mitaka in conjunction with his poet partner, Madeline Gins. According to the SushiLog: ‘Painted in eye-catching blue, pink, red, yellow and other bright colors, the building resembles the indoor playgrounds that attract toddlers at fast-food restaurants. Inside, each apartment features a dining room with a grainy, surfaced floor that slopes erratically, a sunken kitchen and a study with a concave floor. Electric switches are located in unexpected places on the walls so you have to feel around for the right one. A glass door to the veranda is so small you have to bend to crawl out’. Read more

Tallest Man on Earth, the rasping Swedish folk singer-songwriter and one of the unsung heroes of 2008, recently recorded the beautiful song A Field of Birds, a nice adjunct to his summer album release, Shallow Grave. His sound is so loose and unmanicured, and carries a poignancy reminiscent of the rusty, early Bob Dylan.
