Sparked: a new art and design collective
Sparked is a new art and design collective directed by Geoffry Gertz collaborating with artists and illustrators to infuse their unique concepts and visions into well crafted ‘art products‘. The debut Artist Series features the work of award winning illustrator and New York Times contributor Igor Kopelnitsky. Gertz created the boxed letterpress card set of eight humorous original designs crafted from Crane’s Lettra Letterpress re-purposed cotton paper. Each of Kopelnitsky’s designs are an unique and amusing commentary on issues ranging from energy independence to the evolution debate with themes and titles including Play Date With The Devil, Bright Idea, Heavy Thoughts, Don’t Be Shy, Balancing Act, Peace Out, Drill Baby Drill, and So Evolved.

Yigal Ozeri’s photorealistic paintings
Israeli-artist Yigal Ozeri’s provocative photo-realistic paintings of young women in nature look like a large format photographs, but are actually the work of minute brushstrokes laced together. Inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites, the paintings are exotic portraits of woman enraptured by nature, caught in the lens of the artist’s eye. Ozeri’s inspiration lies in Carl Jung’s concept of the Anima, the psychology of the female’s true inner self. Read more

Creative advertising packaging
Despite the intentions of many, it’s not so often that advertising — as an industry — truly thinks outside the box. Yet, when executed well, clever eye-catching advertising actually works. It does. As these examples will attest to. Read more

This reminds me of the French Artists Salons years ago where creative artists met and shared their concepts. Also of my days in Greenwich Village during the 50’s, a true atmosphere of collective art and excitement.

My friends will be shocked to receive actual paper correspondence from me, but with these marvelous cards to send, I can’t resist putting pen to paper! “So evolved” is perfect for Darwin’s 200th birthday celebration!

I can not say enough about these amazing cards! As the Fashion Merchandising Director for Glamour Magazine, I look for art in everything- in my clothes, household goods, paper goods, etc. I was THRILLED to find these artful, thought-provocking cards. Even the paper they are printed on are amazing. Easily the coolest cards I have seen in a long time- watch out Hallmark, Papyrus, etc.- these cards are taking over!

Geoffry Gertz’s Sparked cards are brilliant. Anyone who believes, as Albert Einstein once said, that “it is the duty of every citizen according to his best capacities to give validity to his convictions in political affairs.” can start announcing their own convictions on important issues from the energy crisis to war by sending Sparked’s Igor Kopelnitsky cards. This clever, well-designed, and environmentally-friendly stationery makes a powerful, thought-provoking, and timely statement– even before you’ve written a word!

These cards are so provocative! So many interpretations! My personal favorite is “Play Date With The Devil”! I have just the person in mind as a recipient! Maybe, I will keep the “Bright Idea” one for myself! All joking aside, these cards are beautifully crafted!

I like the primal nature of these cards.
In our high tech culture that envelops us daily in a googleplex of intangible gigabytes, the images on Igor’s cards form an instantly indelible and tangible impression.
I will frame these for my office to share with my students.

Many years ago, the Italian designer Fupete and I collaborated on an issue of the magazine I was editing at the time, STU, his intricate art direction giving space and life to the cacophony of illustrations and photography bursting from its pages. The guy is one hell of an art director, and a brilliant designer as well, his latest work revealing his well-developed sense of shape and texture, which meshes seamlessly with his subtle use of color gradients. Sculptor Richard Stipl creates disturbing, gothic, vaguely religious tableaus using hyper-realistic, resin casted figures that quite often are engaged in some bizarre behavior, covered in blood, leaking gore, or otherwise frozen in some horrific pose. A friend of mine said, ‘If you’re going to develop that level of skill, why would you use it to make such ugly things?’ I kind of like gross things, though, so it doesn’t bother me. Read more

Says Van She bassist and vocalist Matt Van Schie about the Bush Tetras track — Too Many Creeps — from 1982: ‘I LOOOVE this tune. It opens with a perfect snare roll, and then the counter bass and guitar rhythms make it so cool. The lyrics are even more valid today. They’re one of my favourite bands of all time, and so many people try to do what they did for real. What a time! I wish I was born back then in New York, hanging out with these kids. Ahhhh!!’
NASA has released some pretty amazing audio recordings of sounds from the moons of Saturn. The weirdest thing about them is that they actually sound like Theremin warbles and echoey whooshy sounds from ‘50s movies about space.

I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.

Scanners’ new single Salvation
I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
