SNAP! issue five on the streets of Montreal
The fifth issue of our favourite Canadian mag, SNAP!, has just hit the streets and it’s literally bursting with all their creative discoveries from downtown Montreal.
The issue’s Hibernation theme offers up a comprehensive winter survival guide, complete with a lesson in poker, some short fiction to pass the time indoors, and the results of their first ever reader-based sex survey. Six pages long, the survey is a funny and local insight into the sex lives and preferences of Montreal’s twenty and thirty-something crowd.

We have a new track by Oregon songwriter Boy Eats Drum Machine available for free download in the Music Download section of Lost At E Minor (pssst, it’s in third column of the site), along with a stack of new tracks by artists such as Gang Gang Dance, Jihae, and The Black Keys live in concert. Last weekend I went to the Golden West in Baltimore to check out the What Cheer? Brigade, a marching band from Providence. I wasn’t expecting much, but when they opened with a cover of Slayer’s Raining Blood, my knees buckled. I think I could hear a musak version of that riff, and I’d still bang my head. The rest of the band’s set was just as riotous, with people dancing so hard, you’d think we were at Mardi Gras. I haven’t had that much fun at a show in ages.

Disregard the buzz that surrounds those other cupcake shops in New York City. Cheeks Bakery in Williamsburg houses the best cupcakes that I’ve eaten. The clean and understated decor extends to the menu, where being fancy doesn’t rule on the cupcake shelves. Cheeks offers, simply, vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with either vanilla or chocolate cream. But if you do want more, Cheeks has that as well, a limited selection of pies and cakes.
Having originally sprung from the Shaky Isles (otherwise known as New Zealand), I can appreciate the humour in the New Zealand cartoon series, Bro Town, the first homegrown animated series to screen during local prime time. It’s simply brilliant, a real play on the ‘thuck’ accent and small town ways of our Kiwi brethren.
I’m not a watch wearer, but if I was, then I’d be rocking the wickedly cool new range of Diesel timepieces. The Basel 2008 collection is a sparkling, futuristic, retrotastic anagram of style, character and precision — of the digital variety. My favorite? The 1980s-themed watch above, with its ’silver metallic leather cuff’ and ‘reflective shine’. Read more
I really don’t understand cat haters. Most of them claim that our feline companions are aloof and distant, graceful and mysterious to a fault. In my opinion, cats are just as goofy as dogs, which is why any documentation of them acting like spazzes makes me chuckle uncontrollably. Read more
