Roman Dirge’s comic art

I’ve been a big fan of illustrator Roman Dirge’s work since I first spotted his comic, Lenore, on the shelves of Sydney’s Kings Comics in 1996. Dirge hails from L.A. but his work is decidedly more devilish than you would expect from the City of Angels. While Lenore tells darkly humorous tales about a little dead girl and her murderous exploits, Dirge gets even blacker in his book Something at the Window is Scratching, a short volume of poems guaranteed to give children nightmares and adults fits of criminally insane laughter. My favourite poem, entitled Boodini and Choobie, is about a ‘rotting magician’ and his ‘decomposing hare’. Every time I read it I giggle like an escaped mental patient, which works well when I want the bus seat all to myself. This year Dirge has a ‘best of’ volume coming out called Taxidermied, as well as a full-length Lenore book entitled Wedgies.

Best for reading in the warm glow of an existential crisis, Dorothy Gambell’s Cat and Girl is a brilliant online comic series. It’s my daily fix of clever puns, political satire, pop culture references and biting wit, lovingly rendered in cute black and white drawings. Cat and Girl are housemates and best friends, and like all best friends, they can talk about anything: from literature, to the economy, to the perils of playing ping pong with a rotten egg. Sure, there are arguments, but most are resolved by Cat’s unwavering sense of surreal humour that balances out Girl’s eternal pessimism. ‘How do you stay warm in the cold shadow of death?’, she asks him, pleadingly. ‘Fireworks’, he replies. Illustrator Molly Crabapple is inspired by Victorian culture and the sexy, bawdy world of burlesque. Her illustrations are colourful and erotic, her voluptuous female subjects bursting out of their corsets while eying off the viewer with undisguised lewdness. Having worked on numerous commercial projects, organised her own shows and illustrated several graphic novels, Crabapple also created Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art School in New York City in 2005.
The twenty minute walk from my house to Newtown takes me down cramped backstreets and past run-down buildings decorated with some of the best stencil art I’ve ever see. One of its creators is Sydney’s Syke, a member of a group known as the Original Art Club, who ‘busk’ their art on the streets of the inner-city suburb. Read more

I have followed the Clayton Brothers’ work since the mid-90s and had the pleasure of meeting them a few years back. Their art is a reflection of what great people they are. It’s really compelling to see their work in person. I love it and can’t get enough of it. I wish I had a lot more money so I could have a big one in my house.

TIME magazine’s annual Person of the Year issue is coming out this week. I illustrated one of the runner-ups, but of course, I have to keep my mouth completely shut. I don’t know who is the winner though. On TIME’s website, you can see all the past covers of this most talked about issue of each year. It’s a good time to look back history and learn from it anyway, don’t you think?
With so many photographers these days making over-stylized digital images, it’s great to see someone like Marlene Marino still working in 35mm. Her use of only natural light, and her languid, straight-forward framing result in intimate, grainy, and candid-feeling pictures that feel like they’ve come out of a forgotten drawer somewhere. The young architect Junya Ishigami is pushing the boundaries of the weightless aesthetic stream of architecture. Here, for the Kanagawa Institute of Technology, he has designed a glass and steel pavilion with a roof that floats on a sparse forest of thin steel columns or ‘flats’. Read more
Lush was one of the best bands to come out of the indie-tastic early ’90s. They set the standard for shoegazey, ethereal pop from the British Isles, and they were about to break big with their 1996 album Lovelife before drummer Chris Acland hanged himself in his parents’ home. The band is a bit of a forgotten gem at this point. Let’s cross our fingers for a reunion.

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally.
