Chris Stain’s first West Coast exhibition
|Brooklyn-based stencil artist Chris Stain has transformed LA’s Carmichael Gallery into a New York City rooftop scene, complete with pigeon coop for his first West Coast solo exhibition — Up On The Roof Countin’ Pigeons — featuring his gritty, enigmatic stencil portraits integrated into the large-scale installation, which offers a unique perspective on contemporary inner city life. The show runs until February 26.

Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design
Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

Aurel Schmidt’s intricate drawings make me want to start a band just so I can use it as album art. The DIY-outsider tack many artists have taken of late has produced some art that makes you think ‘I could do that’, but Schmidt’s work is inimitable — her rendering of hair must make other artists furious with envy. When you first see The Gershwin Hotel, you might think it’s an art gallery or a public art installation. The white, bird-like shapes sticking out of its red facade is certainly unique, without being too loud. The rooms are rather small but the location and accessible price range makes it all worth it.
A colourful thing to do on the net is surf on over to She Breaks for Rainbows, an evolving collection of images and videos featuring rainbows (with ‘Double Rainbow’ tastefully excluded). Read more
Castevet are a promising new experimental black metal band out of New York. They have a much more complex and technical approach than other bands of this ilk, revealing post-hardcore and death metal influences as evidenced by guitarist Andrew Hock’s work in deathgrind outfit Biolich and Boston jazz/death/doom band Ehnahre.
