John Malloy’s One Out of a Hundred exhibition
If you’re in or around the Washington DC area, swing by illustrator — and sometime Lost At E Minor contributor — John Malloy’s first full solo exhibition at the Art Whino Gallery in National Harbor. The show which opens on February 21, takes its name — One Out of a Hundred — from his personal series of seven fine art works that center around the side effects of drugs as a metaphor for the media culture’s long-term effects on the human spirit. There will be more than forty limited edition prints and fifty works of original art on display and for sale, including illustration, fine art, and comics work.

Comic book artist Rafael Grampa’s style reminds me of Taiyo Motsumoto’s but with an art-nouveau and even tattoo-inspired sense of layout informing each panel. His unique renderings of classic comic book characters has certainly rekindled my interest in superheroes. Washington DC artist and designer Pete Morelewicz really likes Bob Ross. No, I mean, he REALLY likes Bob Ross. So much so, he’s created an entire series of prints bearing the TV painting icon’s bushy face. I have to say I’m pretty partial to Phreno-Bob with his ‘happy accidents’ and ‘puffy clouds’.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Timelessness is surely one of the most sought-after characteristics that any artist, writer or musician can aim for in their work. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that what felt good a generation ago still holds true to this day; perhaps even better to know that what made one tick as a child still draws a smile years down the line. I often feel this with certain children’s illustration — they evoke an innolinecence every adult still retains somewhere deep inside.
