The Secret Playlist of Foetus’ JG Thirlwell
By his own admission, J.G. Thirlwell was dropped on this planet some time ago to bestow sonic majesty, chaos, violence, beauty and cunning linguistics on an unsuspecting earth. Under the Foetus mantle he has released a number of albums full of orchestral soundscapes, electronic swathes, big band pastiche, and crunching hard. We checked in with him to see what music had been, errr, pushing his buttons of late: ‘David Lang’s The Passing Measures. Along with Michael Gordon and Julia Wolfe, Lang is one of the founders of Bang On A Can. He is an eclectic composer and this compelling piece creeps and hypnotizes. I wouldn’t call it ambient but it moves like mists, with a dream-like emotional core. Australian electro four-piece Miami Horror’s have just released their debut album, Illumination, a perfect union of horns, acoustic and electric guitars, synths and looping bass lines — all of which creates a seventies French sound. Aussie disco? Ah-mazing!

Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

New York-based Japanese illustrator Yuko Shimizu has been featured on Lost At E Minor several times over the past couple of years. I love the sense of drama her work conveys, the apparent colour clashes that somehow gel despite pre-existing rules about their compatibility.
