Matthew Scott
We checked in with Los Angeles-based photographer, Matthew Scott, and asked him how his recent move from San Francisco has impacted on his career: ‘Work-wise, it’s been a very positive move. There’s a lot more going on down here, not that San Francisco doesn’t have things going on as well. It’s just a simple fact about the size of Los Angeles. There’s a lot more editorial assignments to shoot here, and that has been good’.
‘I’m currently working on a pretty large marketing campaign right now, so in a few months I’ll see what Los Angeles really has in store for me. As far as my personal work goes, it’s always refreshing to relocate. It gives me new places to explore, and in turn, gets my brain going. Being somewhere new gets me inspired to start working on new projects, or continue ongoing projects that may have been on hold for a while’.

Fellow alumni William Powhida has a fantastic new exhibit up at Los Angeles’ Charlie James Gallery, No One Here Gets Out Alive. In this new Series Powhida’s aptly named fictional character, Powhida, flees the New York Art World for a stab at destroying LA, indulging in all of our favorite vices, booze, coke, sex and sometimes art. We read about this debauchery in Powhida’s trompe l’oeil notebook pages, newspaper articles and obsessive lists. I even found myself enjoying an issue of 944. Incredible! Francesco Giusti’s Congo series
Francesco Giusti lives and works in Rome. Of this photo series, he says, ‘In Congo-Brazzaville, SAPE is an old passion that has never stopped, not even during war years. At the arrival of the French in Congo, the myth of elegance was born among young people working for the settlers. In 1922, Andre Grenard Matsoua, well-known for his resistance to the settlers, was the first Congolese to come back from Paris dressed like a true French “Monsieur”, and greatly admired by all his fellow citizens. Today’s members of the SAPE consider themselves as artists and are respected and admired by the whole community’. Read more

Leila Berney was born in Geneva, Switzerland, and currently lives in Sydney, where she has just graduated high school. She uses Canon EOS 400D and does not yet have Photoshop, but she does have creativity, great ideas and concepts to unleash, and a passion for photography. Read more
Whoop Dee Doo this Halloween in Kansas City
Whoop Dee Doo is a performance art group based out of Kansas City, Missouri, and hosted by Jaimie Warren and Matt Roche, alongside fifteen or so other cast and crew members. They travel internationally to put on random shows that, visually at least, remind me of a G-Rated John Waters movie. The idea of Whoop Dee Doo shows is based upon kid-friendly faux public access TV programs (they are filmed but don’t actually air) that appear highly entertaining for adults as well. Last year, they performed at Deitch Projects’ holiday party, amongst other places. Read more

San Francisco-based illustrator Luke Feldman has just had his first children’s book published, Chaff n’ Skaffs: Mai and the Lost Moskivvy, a collaboration with writer Amanda Chin. The book artfully tells the story of Mai, ‘a young girl who never ventured too far from her home. When a lost mosquito interrupts Mai’s sleep, her friend Chaff suggests they escort Moskivvy back home to a faraway land. So begins a courageous girl’s voyage into a fantastic world’, all communicated beautifully through Feldman’s colorful, dynamic and considered illustrations. Read more
