Bob Turek’s MP3 Speaker System

This mp3 player by Bob Turek, built into a mannequin body, may have been very popular with the Courvoisier-sipping gentry of the 1970s, but contrary to the hopes of anyone who would buy one of these now, this sort of thing is sure-fire chick repellent.

Now, this is fun. Zune Originals, the online design studio that you customize your Zune player [yes, we know you have one] with detailed laser engraving, is launching a new collection of Valentine’s Day designs. Inspired by themes of music and love, the new collection features designs from artists like Gary Fernandez, Sanna Annukka and Si Scott. Hint, hint, it’ll make a very lovin’ Valentine’s gift. The Zune Zodiac Series

Oh damn! We’re digging the latest range of Zune Originals designs which include a Zodiac Series featuring exclusive astrology-themed artwork by Colombian illustrator, Catalina Estrada, and Iosefatu Sua. If illustrators are the new rock stars, then Zune is straddlin’ the best of both worlds. Zune, Zune, indeed.

AirCurve

AirCurve is a cleverly-designed acoustic amplifier that turns your iPhone into a no-power-drain alarm clock on your nightstand, or a mini sound system that never needs batteries or adapters. AirCurve looks like a simple, elegantly minimal stand for your iPhone. But inside is a cleverly designed coiled waveguide that collects the sound from the built-in speaker of your iPhone, amplifies it, and projects it into the room.

Luke Butler’s Enterprise series

My roommate is on a big Star Trek kick, re-watching the entire original series. I forgot how amazing and progressive and ahead-of-its-time it was. Actually, Star Trek: the Next Generation is also just as good. Hopefully Luke Butler will paint images from that series next or superimpose Captain Picard’s head on a nude body of Adonis. Read more

Cheeming Boey’s coffee cup art

California-based artist Cheeming Boey makes super-wowza drawings on styrofoam coffee cups. He also keeps a web comic documenting his daily life that is at times hilarious at others rather touching. He reminds me of my friend Jon from high school. Read more

Mikael Alacoque rips familiar and nostalgic objects to the core to create a new sinister image sculptured with abstract moulding techniques. His dead dogs, in particular, have fantastic symbolism, with ice-cream smashed on their little heads. Alacoque is certainly an artist for now and beyond.

No I don’t dance. But heck I was tempted the other night. I was at a Foo Fighters gig, deep amongst the sweat-ridden bowels of a 20,000 strong crowd, with a mind-blowing laser show flashing above me and a band on stage so in the zone it was mesmerising. Read more

We spoke to Dopepope about his latest Metal Man Project: ‘In the fifth grade, I drew a comic called Metal Man about a humanoid robot that went crazy and pulled knives on people. It’s the most ridiculous thing ever. I was a kid! Anyway, I found the artwork and simply traced the head and the logo exactly as I had them and fell in love with the iconic shapes they’ve created’. Car from made ice

Forget battery powered vehicles. Cars made from ice are the future of transportation: no pollution, no honking horns, no painful rap music blasting out of souped up stereos. And if they melt, they melt. You just swim the rest of the way down the slipstream.

Scanners’ new single Salvation

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.

Creative advertising packaging

Despite the intentions of many, it’s not so often that advertising — as an industry — truly thinks outside the box. Yet, when executed well, clever eye-catching advertising actually works. It does. As these examples will attest to. Read more
