Alex Noble is the artist behind the most recent poster in Don’t Panic Magazine, a beautiful piece of work based around the theme of Desire. Originally from Australia, Noble moved to Singapore in 2000, and later Japan, where, until recently, he was an art director at Apple Japan.

I’ve always marveled at Greg Harrison’s mezzotint prints. He is one of a small number of Australian artists specialising in this probably the most painstaking printmaking technique. His strange animals, mythological characters and landscapes create a fantastical world where Durer’s Rhino turned 3D and Medusa is in the city.
WhiteSpac3: arts community website
WhiteSpac3 is a recently launched arts community website. Instead of meaning a blank space, the suggestive name refers to an important element in the aesthetic composition. In design, the white or negative space is what enables objects to exist due to the contradiction with the positive (non-white) elements. It’s a very appropriate concept for a project that wants to be a free space for Australian creative minds, connecting them with galleries and art lovers.

Horses are a recurring for Isabel Rock. Pastel colours, gnomes, glitter and unicorns adorn other pieces. But this light-heartedness is balanced with dripping illustrations, gushing elaborately in swirls and fat blobs. Block color and a feel for excess hint at the distraction of love, yet darker undertones of struggle and conflict exist.
Kate MccGwire graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2004 and has since exhibited all over London, winning a solo show at 2009′s Heart of Glass. Her most recent installations are taken from thousands of pigeon feathers, flowing water and even a mouldy growth on a wall. We asked her why she uses pigeon feathers: ‘I’m currently using pigeon feathers as they come from a bird that is generally reviled — regarded as vermin and referred to as “rats with wings”. I started to collect pigeon feathers that moulted from the birds in a shed next to my studio. I realized that they were actually very beautiful’.

Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Last weekend I went to the Golden West in Baltimore to check out the What Cheer? Brigade, a marching band from Providence. I wasn’t expecting much, but when they opened with a cover of Slayer’s Raining Blood, my knees buckled. I think I could hear a musak version of that riff, and I’d still bang my head. The rest of the band’s set was just as riotous, with people dancing so hard, you’d think we were at Mardi Gras. I haven’t had that much fun at a show in ages.
