Summer Heights High

Back in my days of adolescence, the undeniably cool cast of Heartbreak High were secret idols. That warehouse they lived in! Man, I wanted to be there. But when that went off air, the only taste of beach life in Australia was the vacuity of Home and Away. So it was with real nostalgia, and a full-on rib cracking laugh, that I caught my first episode of the spoof documentary Summer Heights High. It’s absolutely hilarious, there’s no two ways about it. It’s The Office, as interpreted by an Aussie high school.

Johanna Billing’s You Don’t Love Me Yet

As a component of Tiny Movements by Swedish conceptual artist Johanna Billing, the performance piece, You Don’t Love Me Yet, has been presented in over twenty countries since its conception in 2002. Scheduled for August 16, Billing has invited a diverse and exciting collection of Melbourne bands to reinterpret the ever-hopeful tearjerker which was originally recorded by Roky Erikson in 1984. Among those taking part in the event are Beaches, Henry Wagons, Super Wild Horses, Fabulous Diamonds, Tic Toc Tokyo, Francis Plagne, and Teeth and Tongue, each challenged with the task of making something familiar, unique. Secret beaches of New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula

When I read Robinson Crusoe as an Australian child, I had no idea that New Zealand was a place harbouring secret beaches where real life castaways could hide from civilization beneath the shade of cool ferns and caves, on beaches overlooking mysterious islands out at sea. The main difference between Coromandel Peninsula’s New Chums beach and the shipwrecked settings depicted in Defoe’s novel is that the only things running riot here are the crimson blossoms of the native Pohutukawa trees. Instead of toothless mutineers, there are placid dotterel birds nesting beneath the sand. Read more

War is over, if you want it

I was one of the lucky thousands who got hold of this spoof New York Times yesterday morning near Penn Station. I had just finished breakfast at a restaurant with a friend, and for a second I totally believed war had ended wthin those few hours when I was not listening to NPR. It turns out that it was yet another genius project by the Yes Men.

Irina Werning’s Back to the Future photo series

Argentine photographer Irina Werning has complied this beautiful and poignant collection of portraits of adults re-enacting images of themselves as kids. From what I gather, she has asked people to submit photographs of themselves and then returned with them to these same spots at the same times in their lives. She’ll take this project round the world, from Baghdad to Eurodisney, and is looking for willing participants. Read more

Bug fighting in South East Asia

Of all the little idiosyncratic activities I’ve come across since living in Southeast Asia, this nears the favourite. The bug fights are held in a cemetery about half an hour outside of Chiang Mai late in the year when the stags are at their randiest. It pulls an impressive crowd who bet some hefty dollars on the winner, claimed by the beetle who throws its opponent off the revolving log and struts (or crawls) to victory. Read more

What The Fuck Should I Make For Dinner

All hail the magic 8-ball of cooking; the answer to those painful moments of indecision that plague every shopper at around 6pm on a hectic Monday evening. It’s not the nagging voice that questions every decision you make, but the blunt, obnoxious hollering of an online Gordon Ramsay. The kitchen abides.

I’m actually genuinely compelled by Zomgies 2, a scrolling flash game where you are a Pulp Fiction sort of hero killing zombies. The music is great, and the little narrative interludes are really dramatic and awesome, but in a cartoony, almost Futurama way.

If animated wall drawings of severed heads and insect men ejecting their brains from their craniums is what people produce when they have too much time on their hands, then we should do their laundry for them and cook them dinner so they’ll have even more time on their hands.
