OroVerde Invasive Species poster
OroVerde, a German non-profit dedicated to preserving the rainforests of the world, has unveiled a new poster that shows a wide range of bulldozers and heavy equipment, describing them as invasive species of the rainforest.

German illustrator Sophia Martineck’s own description of herself as ‘The Sophisticated Pencil Girl’ is actually rather fitting. Colored pencils were always one those materials the professors always tried to steer us illustrators away from, but Martineck has me rethinking all of that. I really enjoy her flat use of the pencils and the subtle texture they impart.

This illustration by Richard Lee was on the cover of a motorcycle magazine in San Francisco, published in September 2008. They were doing an issue on motorcycle bar fights. Says Lee of the work: ‘The version I sent was the original, but the editor decided that he didn’t want the pink dildo in there, so the actual printed version was replaced with a wrench. I still think the original idea with the pink dildo was funnier’. Yes, so do we.

The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. I’m really digging Los Angeles-based illustrator Jon Han’s textured, colourful, almost scientific work. I find it particularly refreshing how Han frequently eschews most of the physical detail within his tiny figures, which lends itself all the more to further enhancing the diagram like quality of his work.

The Kevin Ayers record Joy of a Toy from 1969 was released by Harvest Records and sits somewhere between Nick Drake and The Byrds. A record slightly ahead of its time, it was filled with enough interesting and clever arrangements and instrumentation to never bore. Girl on a Swing is my favorite tune for the tremolo guitar.
