Shepard Fairey’s guest edited issue of LAEM
Tomorrow we’ll be sending out a special Shepard Fairey Guest Compiled issue of our free weekly email publication to our email subscribers, featuring the work of his favorite artists, photographers and music. Fairey’s iconic image of Barack Obama was recently the cover of Time Magazine’s Person Of The Year issue, but he was well known previously as the creator of the ubiquitous Andre The Giant sticker. We’re honored to have him write exclusively for us about the artwork that excited him most in 2008. Sure, President Obama is just as human as the rest of us, and there is a certain excessiveness to the extent to which he’s been idealized, but I’d rather have a President the world views as a secret agent ninja than one the world views as a bumbling, ignorant fool. Can you imagine an action figure like this one by Hong Kong-based DID Corporation made of Dubya? If they did make one, it’d probably be along the lines of Maxwell Smart.

Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

Iconic artwork recreated using Barbie Dolls
I love the brashness of this ongoing series, Poupée Barbie, by French artist Jocelyn Grivaud, created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the doll that (most) every girl grew up with. Grivaud has pulled stills from iconic movies, paintings and photos, casting Barbie as the star in a statement about her seemingly timeless relevance. Read more

Los Feliz artist Vanessa Prager has been exhibited at the Robert Berman Gallery, Gallery 1988, and the Santa Monica Museum of Art. Her series, Hunting and Gaming — which opens in LA on January 24th — explores the ‘nature of sinister play’. Prager paints ‘starkly-lit scenes of surrealistic moments in daily life; untangling holiday decorations, playing with old toys, driving or chatting. But her odd theatrical arrangements suggest something creepy going on behind the innocent façade’. Read more
I recently stumbled across the beautiful work of Isreali artist Tal R in all it’s raw and colourful splendor. Rough, spontaneous texture, tapestry-like compositions, and artfully placed drips all come together within Tal’s folksy oeuvre. I can’t even really decide which I’m swooning over more — the Grosz-like paintings or his fantastically raw drawings. Read more
Oh man, what I wouldn’t give to be able to sing like Neil Finn. His voice rasps with all the sincerity and integrity of a thousand heartfelt melodies. Heck, I’d probably trade my prized collection of Archie comics for just the chorus on this song. Driving Me Mad? You betcha(dupa). This man is a treasure. Bow low indeed.
