Calling all superheroes for New York Comic Con

Fanboys (and fangirls, for that matter) take note: New York Comic Con 2009 kicks off on February 6 at the Jacob Javitz Center, bringing with it an exciting new generation of artists, illustrators, and graphic designers, including Yoshitaka Amano, Arthur Suydam [featured above], Steve Niles, and David Hine. Comics and graphic novels have come a long way since the old comic strip days, and the influx of international talent in the industry, along with the concentration by publishers on creating more visually compelling books, means that this annual event is no longer just for fanboys. In theory anyway! Now, ladies and gentelemen, is there a Rubberman in the house?

Is Superman renouncing his American citizenship?

Could it be that America’s foremost superhero is turning his back on the country that made him fly? In more ways than one. It’s been reported that in The Incident, a short story in Action Comics #900, the caped crusader (no, not that one) tires of the political mess he’s embedded in and decides ‘to continue working as a superhero from a more global than national perspective’. How it plays out from here? Only Xray vision will reveal.

Old City Blues

Old City Blues is a cyberpunk mystery comic with the mood of a Noir tale, the fast-and-furious action of Japanese animation, and kinetic artwork that reads more like a big-budget sci-fi movie than a comic book. Old City Blues tells the story of a futuristic Athens, Greece, and the police force that navigates through the criminal life that dwells in it. Think Moebius and Paul Pope collaborating on a southeastern European blend of ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Akira’, but with more giant robots. Read more

New Banksy artwork angers the Catholic Church

Banksy has struck again, this time offending the Catholic Church with a bold artwork that critiques their stance on ongoing child abuse scandals. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. And who are we to disagree? Read more

Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design

Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

When you move to a new city or travel a lot, you tend to develop an aversion to maps. They’re usually too clumsy to carry around all the time, become tattered with frequent use, and the unfolding-refolding alone can drive you crazy. Then there’s Palomar’s Crumpled City Maps. Read more

The return of the Brionvega rr226

Italian brand Brionvega has resurrected the classy Radiofonografio piece first created in 1965. The updated version is just like the original turntable/radio unit, but also has a CD/DVD player.

Inspired by the unique digital clock apps created by the designer, Sean Zoega, the i-toc watch is a colorful physical manifestation of digital ideas featuring bespoke two-disc Japan quartz movement. The outer gradient displays the minutes while the inner gradient shows the hours. The rings interact, creating an ever-changing pattern of design and colour.
