|I recently had the honour of doing the cover for the comic’s section in the upcoming Lemon Magazine David Bowie issue, in addition to translating interviews with Battles and These New Puritans into comics for the same issue, each based on one of Bowie’s songs and periods in his career.

Is Superman renouncing his American citizenship?

It’s been reported that in The Incident, a short story in Action Comics #900, the caped crusader (no, not that one) tires of the political mess he’s embedded in and decides ‘to continue working as a superhero from a more global than national perspective’. Old City Blues is a cyberpunk mystery comic with the mood of a Noir tale, the fast-and-furious action of Japanese animation, and kinetic artwork that reads more like a big-budget sci-fi movie than a comic book. Old City Blues tells the story of a futuristic Athens, Greece, and the police force that navigates through the criminal life that dwells in it. Think Moebius and Paul Pope collaborating on a southeastern European blend of ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Akira’, but with more giant robots. Read more

Another Dimension show riffs on The Twilight Zone
If you happen to find yourself in LA over the next few weeks, be sure to check out this amazing show at Gallery 1988, opening May 20. The show, aptly titled, Another Dimension, showcases 50 artists’ works based on the original Rod Serling TV masterpiece, The Twilight Zone. My piece, Like A Tiny Doll Cut From A Shell And Brought To Life, is based on the episode, Stopover In A Quiet Town, where a married couple wakes up in a dollhouse after a long night of partying, only to find they are captives, and new toys, for a giant alien little girl.
Hitting supermarket shelves everywhere soon, I just wrapped up a logo design and four illustrations for Hansen’s Beverage Co (parent company of Monster Energy) and their new line of all-natural iced teas. Flavors include Razzleberry, Sweet Lemon, Imorted Ceylon, and Green. You can collect all four for 99 cents each. [See more of John Malloy's work]
After hearing a year’s worth of speculation that this film might not see the light of day, the new Dave Eggers [McSweeney's] and Spike Jonze adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s vividly imaginative story Where The Wild Things Are is finally hitting the big screen. And I can’t wait! The subtle use of CGI on the faces makes the creatures even more eerily believable. Read more

Kudos to Finnish artist Antti Pedrozo for creating a life-sized Transformer out of a huge block of ice.
Elliot Buford’s drawings and sketches are quick visual one-liners that are in turns hilarious, completely absurd, and even occasionally poignant. His drawings inspired by spam emails is particularly entertaining. Read more
The Australian film collective behind the sci-fi spoof, The Time That Time Forgot, perfectly capture the look and feel of awkward, low-budget rip-offs from the ’70s — the psychedelic lighting, bad dubbing, and amazing hair. Milwaukee’s Neon Hunk make spastic, synth-and-drum madness that is likely to trigger seizures in the uninitiated. Their psychotic, candy-colored aesthetic — complete with terrifying masks and stuffed animals — gives no quarter to the faint of heart, but for those whose retinas and ear canals are sufficiently fortified with scar tissue, the duo’s glitched-out dance attack should provide ample cause to bounce around. While I feel I am not alone in breathing a sigh of relief over this season’s purging of fluoro, in retrospect there was a lot to be learned from the experience: don’t wear all fluoro, or don’t wear fluoro at all. And we slowly trudged back to black, which, despite what other colors may think, will always be the new black. Read more
