Alex Trochut to speak at AIGANY
|Renowned for his technically exquisite type creations, Barcelona-based illustrator and designer Alex Trochut attributes his love of typography to his grandfather, Joan Trochut, a typographer and the creator of a modular typographic and ornament system built in the 40s. Trochut’s philosophy is that ‘more is more’, and this is reflected in his commissions for The Guardian, Nike, The Rolling Stones, British Airways, Budweiser and Diesel. He’s speaking on January 15th as part of the AIGANY Small Talks at New York’s Bumble and bumble. You can register to attend via their website.

A new documentary on the Linotype Machine
Doug Wilson, Brandon Goodwin, and Jess Heugel are currently putting together a feature-length documentary on the linotype machine, invented by Ottmar Mergenthaler in 1886: ‘The Linotype completely transformed the communication of information similarly to how the internet is now changing communication again. Although these machines were revolutionary, technology began to supersede the Linotype and they were scrapped and melted-down by the thousands. Today, very few machines are still in existence’. It’s going to be a film that is bound to make an impression. Pun intended.

New Banksy artwork angers the Catholic Church
Banksy has struck again, this time offending the Catholic Church with a bold artwork that critiques their stance on ongoing child abuse scandals. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design
Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

Named after the first openly gay politician in US history, Harvey Milk make some rather testosterone-heavy tunes. While appealing mostly to the stoner-rock and indie-metal set, the quintet from Athens, Georgia, aren’t afraid of a little melody, as the almost pop track Motown on their latest album, Life … the Best Game in Town, proves. But more often than not, the band gets down and dirty with some knuckle-dragging sludge rock. Amid the haze of searing guitar squeals, menacing power chords, and seismic bass rumbling, though, are some almost math-rock flourishes that hint at the brains behind the brawn.
Tarot cards, folk music, Charles Manson, ballet, freaks and geeks, and Patty Hearst can all take responsibility for being some of the inspiration’s behind the Australian fashion label, Lover.
