Maia Hirasawa’s single, And I Found This Boy

|Now, this will be fun. Swedish-Japanese singer Maia Hirasawa’s album, Though, I’m Just Me, is set for release on February 17 on Thrive Records. She gets a lot of comparisons to Regina Spektor and Lykke Li, and Bust recently compared her to Feist and a ‘less-angsty Bjork’. And, watching the video for her single, And I Found This Boy, it’s not hard to see why.

I’ve been in love with MEG for a while. Yasutaka Nakata’s pristine, euphoric J-Pop production is so succulent and rich. It’s unashamed pop music and the Japanese do it better than anyone else. To radiate such timidness and innocence within these large exuberant soundscapes, it makes me want to dance.

Banksy has struck again, this time offending the Catholic Church with a bold artwork that critiques their stance on ongoing child abuse scandals. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design
Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

Italian photographer Guido Castagnoli’s interest in photography began when he shot his first images using a family-owned Leica. Following this, he left his position at the advertising firm to devote himself entirely to photography. He is now represented by Periscope Creative, Berlin and Sasha Wolf Gallery, New York. I haven’t bought a CD in a while but I was strolling down Wellington’s Cuba Street looking for a bit of inspiration the other day when Liam Finn’s music tapped me politely on the shoulder and dragged me into the music store. Liam is New Zealand music royalty, of Neil Finn descent, although — with his wild hair and beard — he’s looking a bit more like a young Jesus these days. The record is made with the help of an analogue loop machine, and you’ll find the kind of stunning instrumental crescendos that I haven’t heard since The Beatles Hey Jude. He engages emotionally and spontaneously, with both skill and showmanship.
If Ziggy Stardust had made jewelry instead of music, he would have made stuff like my friend Juliet Rutigliano does. Read more
