Mark Mallman is a true showman
by Over ten years, Mark Mallman has released five full-length LPs and toured America twenty-two times, yet he remains pretty unknown in the mainstream. However, he is known for one thing that no one else can match: he has performed the longest rock song ever written, a piano solo with the rear tire of a full sized motor scooter, for ten hours inside of a refrigerator box. For real! Mallman’s songs have been featured on This American Life, Public Radio International, MTV, the Oxygen Network, and most recently as the theme song to The Bank of New York Mellon. ‘Some people over think what I’m doing. Yeah, on one level it’s deconstructivism, but on the other it’s simply parlor tricks. They used to call it showbiz’, he says. His live performances are something else, as Mallman approaches the keyboard like an electric guitar, lyrics like an existentialist writer, and the stage like a circus performer. Awright.

Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design
Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

These photographs are so good I bought the book. I discovered Merkley??? on Flickr. This bearded photographer is a slightly unnerving straight-talking San Franciscan whose images of friends (mainly wannabe models) push the boundaries of symmetry, skin tone, colour and pleasure to the very limits.
Back in the day, when I was a skinny teenager on the great pedestal of life, I had a real obsession for the understated, low-fi, deliciously melodic and somewhat blurry sounds of the New Zealand Flying Nun bands.
