Feature Shoot: a new photography website

Ok, so maybe it’s the extra-strong Brooklyn coffee I’m drinking or perhaps its that the pine coated goodness of Christmas is well and truly in the air, but I’m kinda excited this morning as my wife has just launched her website, Feature Shoot, which is a resource for photo editors, art directors, industry professionals, and pretty much anyone who appreciates good photography. It’s a great way to discover new photographic talent and the website is already bursting with interviews with up-and-coming American photographers alongside that of established photographers who have completed a project or whose work has taken on a new direction.

Bizarre Argentine Record Covers

Bizarre Argentine Record Covers is a blog that compiles just that, stating that ‘this blog shows and shares those albums that are considered bizarre for many reasons: because of their music, the performers, or the artwork. Those albums we will never understand how it is that someone bought them’. Of course, there are outstanding albums, from retro actors such as Rodolfo Bebán, to the legacy of Johny Tolengo, or the rhythms of the Argentine Rick Wakeman, known as Walter and his Organ. Russian LOL cats

Just when you thought the Internet’s most played-out meme was dead, a new variation on it keeps it going for one more web cycle. Russian LOL cats are actually freaking hilarious, lampooning ridiculously outdated Cold War stereotypes of our Ruskie comrades.

Jessica Serran’s whispy, whimsical drawings and paintings combine text and poetry with strange, bulbous, hallucinatory shapes and figures. Her doodle-like work looks deceptively crude, but the subtly expressive images she makes reveal a deliberate hand that reserves control for a foreshortened face or a delicately shaded gradient.

The slow building melody and delicate folktronica production of London-based James Yuill’s This Sweet Love is the perfect soundtrack to a lazy Sunday morning.

Brian Bress is my art obsession at the moment. I recently saw his show at the LFL gallery in New York, and his collages and photographs were so striking, modern and funny that I couldn’t stop staring at them.

The strategy based architectural firm Popular Architecture has created a scheme that takes on the spread of cities. Based on the estimation that London will need to provide housing for 100,000 new people each year up until 2016, this building houses 100,000 in one hit. Read more

Seldom has black humour been done so well. On the surface, this film about the everyday lives of some unusually mundane characters, sounds extraordinarily boring. But it is instead a cutting comment on the absurdity and drudgery of everyday life. The characters try to break out or change their lives without success, and the results are bleak and hilarious. I was initially drawn to Belgium-born Christophe Coppen’s jewellery before discovering that he produces two mens and womens collections each year, consisting not only of jewellery, also of but couture pieces and home accessories. With seven interior collections to his name, and a past history as both a theater director and an actor, his work is an expression of his creative brilliance.

We spoke to Dopepope about his latest Metal Man Project: ‘In the fifth grade, I drew a comic called Metal Man about a humanoid robot that went crazy and pulled knives on people. It’s the most ridiculous thing ever. I was a kid! Anyway, I found the artwork and simply traced the head and the logo exactly as I had them and fell in love with the iconic shapes they’ve created’. Almanac Market

Almanac Market in Philadelphia is slightly pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. Offering fantastic bread, cheeses, produce, and cured meats such as sopressata and pepperoni, it was a great pit stop when my band played in town, and definitely more economical and tasty than hitting a greasy spoon for road snacks.
