Mark Vallen’s folk-art-esque paintings and sketches draw from Frida Kahlo and Francisco Goya, but with a modern activist realist bent — the Angelino artist strives to express themes of ‘human solidarity and compassion’. His paintings sometimes fall flat, but his pencil drawings are more consistent, with greater depth and detail in general than his oils.
