Campaign Monitor’s new killer app

Our friends over at email delivery platform, Campaign Monitor, which we use to send out our weekly Lost At E Minor and My Secret Playlist newsletters, really are the leaders in the pack. We’ve been long time fans and I’ve lost count of the number of firms I’ve referred to their service, so we’re stoked to see that they have launched a killer new app in email newsletters for designers.

They have merged two products – Campaign Monitor and MailBuild – into a single platform. Using Campaign Monitor, you can now send campaigns for yourself, your clients and even let your clients send their own campaigns, all from a single account. Their service lets designers import newsletters from html or the web and optimises the code for delivery and display (a massively complex area for anyone who’s tried to get something looking good in Outlook!). Designers can also white-label their site for use by clients, and set the amount clients pay for their emails. For these reasons and many more, Campaign Monitor is becoming the Google of email newsletters for designers.

No First Date

No First Date is a blog documenting the correspondence generated by a fake profile of a sexy girl on a dating site. One has to wonder how these dudes don’t see through the prank, but their credulity sure is entertaining.

Bizarre Argentine Record Covers

Bizarre Argentine Record Covers is a blog that compiles just that, stating that ‘this blog shows and shares those albums that are considered bizarre for many reasons: because of their music, the performers, or the artwork. Those albums we will never understand how it is that someone bought them’. Of course, there are outstanding albums, from retro actors such as Rodolfo Bebán, to the legacy of Johny Tolengo, or the rhythms of the Argentine Rick Wakeman, known as Walter and his Organ. Russian LOL cats

Just when you thought the Internet’s most played-out meme was dead, a new variation on it keeps it going for one more web cycle. Russian LOL cats are actually freaking hilarious, lampooning ridiculously outdated Cold War stereotypes of our Ruskie comrades.

Crimea X’s Secret Playlist

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. It was during the 80s when I was extremely young, and I’ve never stopped listening to this song’. Read the rest of Crimea X’s Secret Playlist.

Cool website? Come on guys…

Hey Chris, I sense you’re skeptical… We rate CM as a tool for designers and stand by the post. Just as we do for other products and website which we have no relationship with.

I once went to a Williamsburg party at which world renowed Card Stacker, Bryan Berg, was also in attendance. I’d been told beforehand about his ability to construct large scale models of cityscapes out of cards: using no glue, no outside support, and no trickery. Read more

Aesop’s signature space in Fitzroy, Melbourne, looks amazing, we’ve got the word on how and why. Why was Gabriel Garcia Marquez chosen as the featured author? ‘There are literary giants and then there are writers like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, whose talents redefine not only the genres they choose to work within but what’s possible in literature as a whole. The fact that his work has transcended his own language and culture has also prompted our decision to pay homage’. Read more

Derrick R. Cruz has channeled his talent for creating densely detailed works into the creation of the brand Black Sheep and Prodigal Sons. Fuelled by the New York city art and fashion scene, Cruz’s pieces are timeless but relevant, and beautifully detailed in their imperfections. They combine gold, silver, resin and bronze to create dark but wearable art.

If ever there were an apt description of our time, it would be that we are the ‘mobile generation’, in every sense of the word. We are a people of movers, we are offered choice on so many levels. And, in this way, we are far removed — both in ideology and practice — from those generations before us, who were generally more static and certainly less transitory. Read more

Sometimes tests are just too hard. Sometimes they’re just dumb. Funny Exam Answers collects all the funniest and most ridiculous results of students who may not have book smarts, but are quite clever and creative in other ways.

Micah P. Hinson is like every rustic, broken down, and pieced back together country great that’s ever been. Only hipper and slightly less sombre. This track, Diggin’ A Grave, is a button-up hoe down with a classic pop chorus and a jangly banjo accompaniment. Yup, some folk have all the fun.

Cloud Control have just unravelled a newly recorded track, Gold Canary, from their forthcoming 2010 album. It’s straight up pastoral Blue Mountains goodness. I actually heard it live earlier this year and it sounded quite rad.

Scanners’ new single Salvation

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
