Chicago 10

This American film was chosen to launch the Australian-wide Human Rights Film Festival. Through the use of archive footage and animation, it tells the story of protests in Chicago against additional troop deployment and the introduction of a national draft, and is a rare mix of being both historically significant and extremely entertaining. The action shifts between the protests and a subsequent court case, both being painstakingly mixed into a riveting and coherent story. There is no footage of the court case though, only court records, so the courtroom and participants have been animated. The medium is able to show viewpoints and quirks that would’ve been otherwise impossible and the result is an innovative, humorous and affecting way to present historical facts. The Human Rights Festival is happening in Melbourne until November 30, Perth from November 29-30, Sydney from December 4-7 and Brisbane from March 6-7.

The story of Bradley Manning, not as a Wikileaks ’hacktivist’, but as a young American soldier simultaneously going through a crisis-of-conscious and a crisis-of-gender-identity. Melancholia: a film by Lars von Trier

I wish there were a lot more of the types of films made by Lars von Trier. Each is very different but still distinctly von Trier, and each is superb. Melancholia is the follow up to the wonderfully confronting Antichrist. This is all about the end of the world, and told with an honesty and pacing that is probably much closer to the actual end of the world than all the Hollywood crap would have you believe. Read more

We Need To Talk About Kevin: based on Lionel Shriver’s novel

A delightful uncomfortable film, told from the point of view of a broken woman. Kevin’s just not right, and that’s obvious from the outset as mother Eva battles to bring him up in a world where the onus is put squarely back on the mother. The intensity is poured on throughout, as tragedy seems imminent. Read more

Channeling Justin Timberlake and Alan Vega, or both or neither, Spanish Dancer is on his own axis, spinning to the BPM of a lost drum. At one point, between moving back and forth between Providence, Rhode Island and Miami, Florida, he discovered punk and his uncle bought him a ratty 50 dollar Cruise VMI guitar to mess around with. Subsequently, Spanish Dancer material is a little snarky, self-aware, and fun, while still retaining all the complex spastic freakout moments of his prior band, A Trillion Barnacle Lapse. His debut album, Burned Up, Bred High, is out now and we have the lead single, The Hustler [listen below], available for free download via the Music Download section of the Lost At E Minor site.
