Death Race

People who talk in cinemas should be shot. Anyone who answers, messages or even checks a mobile phone while in a cinema deserves to suffer a similar fate. That’s the problem with going to see a film that appeals to the lowest common denominator. You have to sit in a cinema with them. Luckily there were that many explosions, killings, fast cars, hot girls and clever quips, that even those that tried to distract everyone else eventually had to give up. I spend a lot of my time watching intellectual, intelligent films that push boundaries and I find them both rewarding and enjoyable. Sometimes, though, it is extremely cathartic and refreshing though to just watch shit explode. So many films attempt to do this but often fail. Death Race even contains enough twists and script complexity, that it’s actually exciting throughout. If you expect nothing but entertainment, this film will leave you extremely satisfied.

Australian movie A Few Best Men

With all the gross out jokes and silliness of the common comedy romp, you’d think making them would be easy. Well, it’s not. It’s actually really difficult. Writing a joke is one of the hardest tasks anyone can undertake. Read more

Melancholia: a film by Lars von Trier

I wish there were a lot more of the types of films made by Lars von Trier. Each is very different but still distinctly von Trier, and each is superb. Melancholia is the follow up to the wonderfully confronting Antichrist. This is all about the end of the world, and told with an honesty and pacing that is probably much closer to the actual end of the world than all the Hollywood crap would have you believe. Read more

while i totally agree with everything you said about seeing a film in theaters, and even about watching shit explode, i’ll have to say i’m skeptical about seeing death race. the 1975 film “death race 2000″ is easily one of my favorite cult films. to see it butchered with jason “i’m an asshole with no talent” stathman could soil my overall idea of what death race is. i don’t know if my soul can take another bastardized remake like this.

We love sex in art. No, not in a smutty Benny Hill kinda way, but rather the way in which Australian-based website Sex In Art takes a healthy peek at all things arty and well … sexual. There’s some beautiful illustration work up there and some evocative photography. Heck, I’m getting a little hot under the collar just writing about it. While most of the work they feature is work friendly, some of it isn’t. Still, it’s worth more than a casual glance, like this painting by Chinese artist, Guan Zeju.

Now this is fun. The aptly named The Kooks cover the equally as aptly named MGMT for Australian radio network, Triple J. The song, Kids, is about as upbeat as any minor key progression can get. We like.
