Waltz With Bashir

|Long gone is the time when animation was for children, and the gritty style of Waltz With Bashir seems to have first reached a wider audience in the recent past with Scanner Darkly. That film, like Waltz With Bashir, adds a realism and depth through simple colours and uncompromising scenes, which it is difficult to achieve with real actors. The stunning opening of Waltz with Bashir, featuring a pack of rabid, rampaging dogs, with gleaming, yellow eyes is the ideal example. The film then tracks a veteran of the Israeli Army mission in the Lebanon War of the early eighties, as he tries to recover his memories of the conflict and the following slaughter of innocents. His empty memory is probably similar to that of many of us who have either forgotten or never even heard of this conflict. As a story it’s wonderful, as animation it’s beautiful, and as a piece of history, it shouldn’t be missed.

Andreco’s Fake Religion animation
Presented only with stills from Italian artist Andreco’s stop-motion animation Fake Religion, I was really loving it, purely based on its stark, surreal imagery. I was pretty disappointed not being able to locate the actual video, but that aside, I simply adored the images. I really would have loved to have seen the video presented in the breathtaking setting of the Palazzo Re Enzo in Bologna. Such a beautiful contrast of aesthetics between the dramatic murals and vaulted ceilings of the Palazzo and the stark graphic imagery of Andreco’s animation. Read more
The Black Dog’s Progress animated short
Stephen Irwin (not to be confused with the Crocodile Hunter) made this great animated short which tells the story of an abused dog via a series of looping flipbooks.
Man, it must be so cool being a kid right now with awesome videos such as this animation by Luke Jinks to get them excited about science.

Valentino: The Last Emperor — Fashion documentary
A documentary about one of the world’s most famous fashion designers? Hmm. Not a film I’d ever choose to see, but sometimes we do what we don’t want to in order to make friends happy. It’s called compromise apparently, and the experience reminded me that any material, if well structured and presented, can make a decent film. The filmmakers follow the over-tanned Valentino Garavani and his long-term lover and business partner Giancarlo Giammetti. Read more
Larry David plays a slight variation on his Curb Your Enthusiasm incarnation, spouting some of the most articulate rants on humanity in Woody Allen’s new comedy. I enjoyed last year’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but this is definitely better. It’s a spectacularly executed comedy farce, with the action constantly escalating along the way, adhering to the old comedy formula of putting the characters through hell for big laughs. Read more
Black Dynamite blaxploitation movie trailer
One very angry and unstoppable man wages war against drugs and malt liquor. A take-off of the old blaxploitation films, this is parody at its best, with many knowing nods to camera and hilarious moments involving clichés taken to their extremes. There’s the Asian kung-fu master, pimps and orphans hooked on heroin. It all begins with Black Dynamite being spurned on his quest for blood after his brother’s brutal murder, and then pushed further for the love of a good woman. There are hoes and guns, along with catchphrases and great one-liners. See it.

A culmination of nearly four years of writing and recording, Omaha quintet, The Faint are preparing to release their fifth album, Fasciinatiion, on August 5 on the band’s own newly-formed label, blank.wav. Working without any time constraints, the songs went through many recorded incarnations before finding their final forms. The result is the best album in the band’s career, a record that is the purest culmination of The Faint’s brilliant musical instincts, ideas and aesthetic, with each member contributing equally to its creation.
