For someone like me, who’s been a HUGE Alfred Hitchcock fan all of her life, this is an absolute must-have: The Hitchcock Birds Barbie Doll. YEs, finally a barbie who’s not for the birds. (Sorry, Mattel!) Sadly, this collector’s item seems to be sold out already. Maybe it’s time for a ‘Dial M for Murder’ edition, then?
To finish off my four years of art school, I decided to base my thesis on something near and dear to me: indie folk band The Decemberists. Their music is some of the most inspiring I have come across; each song tells a rich, nuanced story with a whole cast of compelling characters. The lyrics can be vague enough to be open to interpretation, but contain enough specificity to make a detail freak like me joyfully hunt down reference images of columbine flowers and mistlethrushes. The Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project involved fourteen countries around the world filling crates with the best of their local nightlife and exchanging their country’s crate with another. We were there all the way, following Australia’s involvement. And the final stage, with Brazil and Australia swapping crates, was a beauty! As this video attests.
What will they think of next? A hotel built into a tour bus? Oh wait, they’ve done that. Rotel has 26 capsule-sized sleeping areas for those hardy travellers game enough to sleep and drive.
Before MTV, MySpace, and viral marketing, album covers had the potential to make or break a band. First impressions count, and many a music geek have purchased albums on the cover artwork alone. So what these guys were thinking is simply beyond me. Although, if anyone has a spare copy of Devastating Dave the Turntable Slave then I know someone, ahem, who could take it off you. Read more
Metronomy are a cool little London-based group headed by producer and remix extraordinaire, Joseph Mount. The sound sits somewhere between Autechre and Vitalic: clanging keyboards and body-gurning beats laced with an undercurrent of ominous electronica. It’s not as inaccessible as much of the more twisted electro-based stuff out there at the moment, although it retains an edge perhaps unpalatable for some ears. Yet there’s a catchiness to it that is clearly roping in the crowds: their live shows are a spectacle, complete with synchronised dancing and flashing costumes. If that floats your boat, they’re playing for free at the Tate Britain, London, on 27 September.
