Trailblazers reach Sydney
|The controversial and multifaceted International contemporary art exhibition Trailblazers hits Sydney this month. Boutwell Draper Gallery will grace multimedia works by pioneering Australian, American and European artists from November 19 onwards. I’m thrilled to see groundbreaking pieces by Ben Frost, Kill Pixie, Copyright and Cleon Patterson [above], to name a few. The vast array of paintings, photography, sculpture, installation, video and digital arts is on display until December 13. C’mon, you know you want to culture your soul.

Notes from Chris is an incredible public art project started by Todd Lamb in 2008 which consists of weird notes, written by a fictional person named Chris, that are posted all over New York City. As a sort of literary version of invisible theater, the notes in aggregate actually succeed in depicting a rather fully rendered character. They are also frickin’ hilarious.
I first saw the work of artist Melissa Webb at an exhibit at the H&H Building in Baltimore. She had converted the sub-roof space of the building into a colorful, vaguely frightening installation of rope ladders, spikes, and colorful flags draped everwhere to make the place look like Swiss Family Robinson’s treehouse if it had been built by post-apocalyptic anarchist pirates. I don’t know about you, but I struggle with misplacing my little SanDisk USB stick. That’s why I think Rene Lee’s Metro Flash Drive is one of the savviest, aesthetically pleasing pieces of digital stationary designed this year. It’s ironic how so many females refer to themselves as Barbies, but the vast majority will never actually get to be one. But for Nicki Minaj, that’s an entirely different story. Mattel’s Barbie crew teamed up with the Young Money rapper to bring her Barbie persona to life in the name of charity. Think classic highlighter pink hair with a blunt cut, flamboyant makeup and Minaj’s signature Barbie necklace. All proceed of the doll’s auction will benefit Project Angel Food, an organisation that works to provide food for people affected by HIV and AIDS.
Add a little swagger to your style with the Alpina M1 vintage sunglasses. The 80s-made shades have been worn by the likes of Rick Ross, Jazy-Z, Victoria Beckham and Stevie Wonder to name a few. And now they’re available to buy at Bangkok’s funky SuperrZaaap! Terminal 21 store.

Yes, we can make Barrack Obama sushi! Well, Ken Kawasumi can. The award-winning sushi chef from Tokyo Sushi Academy took out the 2009 championship title with his adorable presidential creation. He used small shrimp (amis) to form Obama’s skin, black sesame for his hair, and fish paste for teeth. Why can’t Australia have a handsome Prime Minister so we can make political sushi?
