|MyPetsQuare loves you, and you will love them too. Two Sydney girls with a desire to design and create form the basis of this label. Vicki Lee and Angelique May-Bennett play with the idea of individualism and the longing to stand out from the crowd. MyPetsQuare can be found lurking in inner-city streets and on the backs of kids dancing the night away. This label is easy to wear (I mean, in the sense that you can throw it on and look good without trying) and it is taking over the Sydney fashion scene one pet lover at a time.

I breathed a sigh of relief when I first discovered menswear label, Saint Augustine Academy. Since its inception in 2002, the Sydney-based team have risen to cult-status amongst individuals with a keen eye for sophistication and intelligent design. Playing on the lifestyle of a modern rock and roll star, the designers at Saint Augustine Academy are heavily inspired by the rock nouveau ethos that surrounded bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain. Designers Alvin Manalo and Adrian Amores met in the mid-90s whilst studying economics at Macquarie University (not exactly feeling destined for fashion design). As chief designer, Alvin had no fashion design skills before beginning the label, but has since created consistently contemporary and sought-after designs each season. Read more
Pioneering Australian designer Kara Smith can definitely give Urban Originals a run for their money. She creates the most innovative handbags for those that truly want to stand out. Detailed with lovely pockets and vintage buttons, Smith’s retro inspired designs literally transform original vintage fabrics into ‘one-off’ clutches, handbags, totes and accessories. I’m in love with her clutches! But yes, if you missed her over the week end at the Blue Mountain’s Leura Village Fair, she’s stocked in Glebe and Sydney’s Todae store, as well as at a variety of online outlets.
If you’ve ever wanted to work your alter ego’s dark side without looking like a total emo, now’s your chance. New kid on the block Ben Pollitt is shaking things up with his label Friedrich Gray. And the best part about it? Pollitt’s androgynous range has a little something something for everyone. Read more

New Eyes Open exhibition at the Ambush Gallery
New Eyes Open, sponsored by We Are The Image Makers and Semi Permanent, will feature new work by thirty Australian artists, the majority of whom are emerging artists, with an aim to reinvent and open your eyes to contemporary Australian art. Amongst those showing are Kareena Zerefos, Ben Frost [above] and Jirat James Patradoon. New Eyes Open runs between April 1 and 9 at the aMBUSH Gallery in Sydney’s Waterloo.

I’ve never been one to go nuts over ceramics. However, Louisianna artist Michaelene Walsh may have changed that in a big way. What’s not to love about a ceramic popsicle collection, ceramic representations of classic vintage toys, or her amazingly whimsical mugs? As easily as these objects might have been created out of any other sculptural medium, the clay, with it’s irregularity and beautiful textured glazes, brings a tangible sense of life and character to these objects, which is what makes them special.
Listening to Mum’s fourth album — Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy — for the first time, I was awash with sentimentalism. Amidst carnival trumpets and burlesque beats, there’s a sense of this being a bohemian rhapsody. Perhaps it’s the mix of cello and brass with experimental electronica. Or maybe it’s just the soft vocals that cascade over playful, imaginative sounds. Whatever it is, it’s totally brilliant. [see also Sigur Ros' Heima]

The artwork of James Belcher is dark and evocative, mini snapshots from an overstimulated mind.
Herzog and de Meuron, the Swiss architects, have led the way with this re-use of the existing building fabric of CaixaForum in Madrid. Rather than being slavish to the existing openings, the building has been cut away for a contemporary practicality. We think this is an example of heritage not getting in the way of progress. Check out a similar concept of a previous post re-using the city fabric, where we were dreaming of such thing.
How many times can we play the same song in different settings? Hmmm, I don’t know. But it is a hell of a song, from a hell of a band, as that uniquely English oddity, Jules Holland would no doubt concur.
New York-based eco-line Loomstate create the coolest tees made of organic cotton. Each printed t-shirt not only celebrates nature but is stylishly crafted, with contrasting stitching coupled with signature twisted side seams for a sleek fit.
