Before MTV, MySpace, and viral marketing, album covers had the potential to make or break a band. First impressions count, and many a music geek have purchased albums on the cover artwork alone. So what these guys were thinking is simply beyond me. Although, if anyone has a spare copy of Devastating Dave the Turntable Slave then I know someone, ahem, who could take it off you.

From what I gather, she has asked people to submit photographs of themselves and then returned with them to these same spots at the same times in their lives. Bug fighting in South East Asia
Of all the little idiosyncratic activities I’ve come across since living in Southeast Asia, this nears the favourite. The bug fights are held in a cemetery about half an hour outside of Chiang Mai late in the year when the stags are at their randiest. It pulls an impressive crowd who bet some hefty dollars on the winner, claimed by the beetle who throws its opponent off the revolving log and struts (or crawls) to victory. Read more

It takes an alert photographer to capture no-frills, naturalistic images such as those by Brooklyn-based Youngna Park. There’s an honesty about her work that’s refreshing amid the highly-produced, big-budget styles and the overly-stylized hipster verite that abounds these days.

I caught Chicago’s Ga’an the other night at the Empty Bottle, and they blew me away. I’d never heard of these guys, but they make driving, gothic prog sounds like satanic Krautrock with guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, and the night I saw them, a female vocalist. There is no distinct frontman, but for me, drummer Seth Sher’s intense and precise playing was the highlight of the show.
Wow, these rings by Yasushi Jona, intriguingly designed and rusted and corroded to look as if they were found on the sea floor, are really gorgeous. Read more
