Pantheist
|I’m totally on a huge doom metal kick lately, and Pantheist are one of the more interesting bands I’ve heard lately. Ostensibly a funeral doom band – meaning they play particularly slow and depressive metal – the London-based outfit from Belgium is not as harsh as most bands of this ilk, probably much to the chagrin of many metalheads. I am, however, a big fan of dramatic, theatrical music, so this floats my goat. The clean vocals, monk-like chanting, and occasional acoustic guitars are a nice contrast to the gothic organs, death-metal growls, and plodding pace that are usually associated with this genre.

Dark Castle is a duo from Saint Augustine, Florida, that makes sweaty, hallucinatory, heavy-as-hell doom metal. Frontwoman Stevie Floyd emasculates dudes with her dexterous riffage and gutteral growls while drummer Rob Shaffer uses a bass drum as a floor tom to ensure the destruction of your lower intestines. Macedônian brutal doom outfit Potop, whose name means ‘flood’ in Polish, is one of the most anguished, despairing, dirty, hateful bands of the genre since Burning Witch. Their down-tuned, down-tempo sludge is virulently anti-life, oozing out of the speakers like poison gas. Read more
Finland’s Reverend Bizarre make classic, heavy-as-hell doom metal with clean vocals. The instrumentation still nods at more contemporary bands in the extreme reaches of the genre (Themgoroth, Skepticism, et al), but the Sabbath references are also there, and frontman Sami Hynninen (aka Sir Albert Witchfinder) sings in a snarling baritone that is reminiscent of classic hard rock bands like Uriah Heep and Captain Beyond.

My roommate is on a big Star Trek kick, re-watching the entire original series. I forgot how amazing and progressive and ahead-of-its-time it was. Actually, Star Trek: the Next Generation is also just as good. Hopefully Luke Butler will paint images from that series next or superimpose Captain Picard’s head on a nude body of Adonis. Read more

California-based artist Cheeming Boey makes super-wowza drawings on styrofoam coffee cups. He also keeps a web comic documenting his daily life that is at times hilarious at others rather touching. He reminds me of my friend Jon from high school. Read more

Brian Bress is my art obsession at the moment. I recently saw his show at the LFL gallery in New York, and his collages and photographs were so striking, modern and funny that I couldn’t stop staring at them.
Google recently demonstrated their ability to predict flu outbreaks across America weeks in advance of the outbreaks themselves. It would seem that they are more than just a pretty search engine. And as if that wasn’t enough, they’ve now teamed up with Life Magazine, what was the cornerstone of photojournalism for the Twentieth Century, to digitize 95 per cent of their image bank that never saw the light of day. I don’t know a lot about The Sugars but I like what they do. Their sound is quite rockabilly but quite modern — like White Stripes. They put out a couple of indie singles and I’d really like to find some time to work with them.
