James Rajotte’s photo series on Rochester’s East High School is a revealing insight into the parameters of ’spatial relationships and the connotations of objects’. Of the work, he says: ‘My interest in photographing East came about as I was volunteering in a mentoring program in which students made short video productions with an anti-violent message. When I decided to photograph, I wrote a formal letter to the Superintendent and the Principal. After a bit of humming and hawing they made me East High School’s “official” photographer. I’ve been waiting for a group like this. These New Puritans are balls in your face, 100 miles an hour, pure attack! A young British group that has most of the UK press in the palm of their skinny pale hands, they hint at a sonic mash of Bloc Party mixed with what White Rose Movement were supposed to be. Yann Gross’ photos of tattooed bikers, cowboys, drag races, and Confederate-flag-adorned trailer homes are unnerving documents of the American experience. But his subjects aren’t American, they’re residents of the Rhone Valley in Gross’ native Switzerland. Judging from his photos, Europeans don’t necessarily look down their noses at the U S of A. Some of them actually celebrate it, blemishes and all.

Grace is part of a new series of books by author Dale Cusack. The story chronicles the lives of Grace and her feline companion Boot in their struggle to fight the evil Drawl and the cover illustration was done by Auckland-based artist, and Lost At E Minor contributor, Dennis Juan Ma. We asked him about what shaped the colour choices for the piece: ‘I wanted to create a mystery world within the reality. I wanted the colour to encourage readers to stimulate their imagination. I illustrated the covers with a classical Japanese wood block look to show the oriental flavour of the cat’s world. And it just happens that I’m a wood block art fan’. Read more

Almanac Market in Philadelphia is slightly pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. I feel bad posting here, because I’m the only one, I guess I like to talk about TVOTR though, and if anyone will listen, I’ve probably got quite a bit to say. I remember when Return to Cookie Mountain came out. I went to Greywhale, my local record store and searched for a copy. I liked to think of myself as self sufficient enough to find an album on my own, but after about 25 minutes of futile searching, I realized that either I was an imbecile, or that I was going about things all wrong. I asked the lady behind the counter if she thought she might be able to help me locate the CD, and sure enough it was sold out, sold out on compact disc that is. I was so desperate to hear it that I thew down the extra 10 dollars and bought the vinyl version (which has turned out to be a fair investment, seeing as its now somewhat of a collectors item) and made a trip home to Ma and Pa’s to dig out the old record player. I played it through twice, both records, and fell in love again.
