Cat and Girl online comic series
Best for reading in the warm glow of an existential crisis, Dorothy Gambell’s Cat and Girl is a brilliant online comic series. It’s my daily fix of clever puns, political satire, pop culture references and biting wit, lovingly rendered in cute black and white drawings. Cat and Girl are housemates and best friends, and like all best friends, they can talk about anything: from literature, to the economy, to the perils of playing ping pong with a rotten egg. Sure, there are arguments, but most are resolved by Cat’s unwavering sense of surreal humour that balances out Girl’s eternal pessimism. ‘How do you stay warm in the cold shadow of death?’, she asks him, pleadingly. ‘Fireworks’, he replies. John Malloy’s One Out of a Hundred exhibition
If you’re in or around the Washington DC area, swing by illustrator — and sometime Lost At E Minor contributor — John Malloy’s first full solo exhibition at the Art Whino Gallery in National Harbor. The show which opens on February 21, takes its name — One Out of a Hundred — from his personal series of seven fine art works that center around the side effects of drugs as a metaphor for the media culture’s long-term effects on the human spirit. There will be more than forty limited edition prints and fifty works of original art on display and for sale, including illustration, fine art, and comics work. Read more

Daniel Higgs came to prominence as frontman for Baltimore hardcore band Reptile House and later Lungfish, the first non-DC band to sign to Dischord. Now primarily playing solo, improvised, experimental sets with a banjo and a jaw harp, Higgs has become a bit of a Baltimore icon and counterculture prophet, spouting mystical, Eastern-influenced philosophy and spirituality through his lyrics, spoken word, and amazing art work. He is also a renowned tattoo artist, as evidenced by his own extensive ink.
Rye Rye featuring MIA off the NEET label
M.I.A., quick to recognize talent in her own ranks, signed the first act to her N.E.E.T. label — backup dancer and rapper Rye Rye. Ryeisha Berrain made a name for herself in her hometown of Baltimore working with DJ-producer Blaqstarr. Now, with the video for the single Bang, featuring M.I.A., making the Internet rounds, Berrain is set to release an already overdue debut album.

Wayne Pate — aka Good Shape Design — is pretty inspirational. He worked his way up from a freelance designer, to having his own label, and starting Good Shape Design, to selling both his own work and the work of others; the most notable being Cody Hudson. He sells prints, homewares and artwork which are beautifully framed and presented.
London-based DJ, Kelpe, has just recorded a diverse electro mix for the Allez Allez blog, which you can download, turn up to eleven, and nod yo’ head to. It’s just the tonic for an early afternoon kickstart.
We’ve been featuring some interesting guest contributors on Lost At E Minor over the past six months. Included among them are Angus Andrews, from The Liars, Ben Lee (who wrote about his festish for vintage Rolexes, amongst other things), Brendan Canning from Broken Social Scene, designer Deanne Cheuk, artist Sam Weber, singer-songwriter Laura Veirs (who brought Juana Molina to our attention), and Tegan from Tegan and Sara.
Google recently demonstrated their ability to predict flu outbreaks across America weeks in advance of the outbreaks themselves. It would seem that they are more than just a pretty search engine. And as if that wasn’t enough, they’ve now teamed up with Life Magazine, what was the cornerstone of photojournalism for the Twentieth Century, to digitize 95 per cent of their image bank that never saw the light of day. Now millions of photos stretching from the 1750s to the present day are available on Google Images at the click of a button. Read more

This café, cookie shop, ice cream place in Cobble Hill Brooklyn is all about flavor, aroma and family. Their cookies and ice cream are absolutely to-die-for, and the place is so well-designed, painted in vintage colors with old family pictures printed on the walls, that you’ll want to indulge yourself for more than just a few minutes.
