From 58 to 42 with Love
In the wake of America’s historic presidential election, nearly two years of divisive campaigning, and eight years of a controversial administration, the nation is in desperate need of healing. Beloved Internet personality Ze Frank started From 58 to 42 with Love where contributors use their webcams to post messages reaching out to the side of the country that didn’t vote for their guy. It’s saccharine at times, and there are one or two borderline nasty posts from people that don’t seem completely onboard with the project’s objective. But overall, it’s pretty effective and moving. I’ll admit I needed a couple tissues while reading it.

The famous interview between David Frost and Richard Nixon has recently received renewed media attention following its twentieth anniversary. Those not willing to sit through hours of unedited footage though, like me, can just watch this film. Handy huh? No doubt some of the depth is lost, but this movie also provides fascinating background, such as the difficulties faced by Frost and the mood of a general public hungry for an apology from Nixon, the most despised President in American history. In parts the film does seem to enhance the tension for effect, but overall it’s fascinating to see how Frost manages to cajole Nixon into an apology. By following Frost as he prepares for the interviews, the film also analyses some of the policies of a President that caused unbelievable worldwide damage, with ramifications still manifesting themselves today.
The very talented Jess Snow, the first video artist to be featured by Female Persuasion — the original site for provocative and political female artists — created this ethereal short video for Lost At E Minor. We feel it. We love it. Just like we dug the video that Lifelongfriendshipsociety created. Aw, shucks!

Ourself Beside Me is the band formed by Yang Fan, formerly of all-girl garage punk band Hang On the Box. Beginning as a minimalist, jangly, indie-punk outfit several years ago, the Beijing-based trio has evolved into a more psychedelic, expansive, and experimental project. Its self-titled debut album (produced by P.K.14’s Yang Haisong) shows influences as wide-ranging as Syd Barrett, Can, Talking Heads, and spaced-out contemporary acts from the West — ducktails and Wet Hair come to mind. Yet another diamond in the rough of Beijing rock. Look for them next year at SXSW.
Aimee van Drimmelen’s drumskin paintings
Montreal-based illustrator Aimee van Drimmelen has been collecting used drumskins from local musicians and painting on them. The results are beautiful and for sale (along with her other work) through her etsy store. Read more
Designer Kieran Ionescu apprenticed in Hungary under a master cobbler and has returned to the States to ply his trade in Durham, North Carolina. His company, BlackArm Bespoke, specializes in custom, handmade shoes that he makes himself using the traditional methods he learned abroad. It’s good to see yet another up-and-coming craftsman keeping old trades alive.

It’s official, I’m back into jewellery after detoxing from the 2001 chandelier earring craze. Aurélie Bidermann used to work at Sotheby’s New York in their Impressionist and Contemporary Art department but has been slowly raising though the ranks as one of the most innovative jewellery designers around today. One of the biggest clothes swapping site is Big Wardrobe, with over millions of dollars worth of free clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories to swap. It features everything from designer to High St, American Apparel to Luella.
As someone who thinks more about traveling than actually gets to do it [damn, it should really be the other way around], it was good to come across the latest batch of Wallpaper* city guides the other day. Tyr are a great Viking metal band from the Faroe Islands, a tiny nation between Greenland and the British Islands. They sing in Faroese, Danish, and English, crafting amazingly catchy songs inspired by Dream Theater, mid-era Metallica, and Black Sabbath.
