We Were Promised Jetpacks Secret Playlist
Boasting perhaps the greatest band name on the planet, Scottish four-piece We Were Promised Jetpacks released their debut album, These Four Walls, on Pod Records [Inertia]. Standing alongside the likes of Frightened Rabbit, Glasvegas, and The Twilight Sad as leading figures in Scotland’s indie-rock renaissance, the band’s first full-length was recorded almost entirely live. We checked in with them to get the inside word on the music that inspired it all and they started with The Twilight Sad song, I Became A Prostitute [listen below]: ‘This is the new single by one of the best bands around. It’s pretty perfect. We’ve been lucky enough to see this live three times recently, and each time it’s felt like that footage of the nuclear bomb going off that they love to use on TV. You know when the house gets flattened?’

We love the energy and raw power of Scottish rock group, Frightened Rabbit. So we checked in with frontman Scott Hutchison about their interesting, but relatively unheard of, hometown: What else outside of Frightened Rabbit should we know about Selkirk, Scotland? ‘It was the birthplace and home of Sir Walter Scott the romanticist writer, it has a few excellent delicacies such The Selkirk Bannock (essentially a fruit loaf, in a kind of dome shape), the Pink Bun (a bun with pink icing, available in Cameron’s bakery on the High Street). The annual town festival, known as the Common Riding, involves a dangerous combination of heavy drinking, horses and large flags. It’s such fun!’ Read more

Conceptual artist Pascual Sisto stumbled across a Google Maps street view of Minnie Street in Fairbanks Alaska that was obscured by a plastic bag. He has the view preserved on his site in case Google decides to re-photograph the intersection.
No Age are doing something different to the mass of noise-laden, guitar-drum duos canvasing the lo-fi airwaves at the moment. I’m just not sure quite what. Their album, Nouns, is receiving top-rate reviews after sell-out crowds after screaming, obsessive fans. The music is simply massive: a vast landscape of heat haze, somehow both tranquil and manic, punctuated by singer Dean Sprouts backdrop of barely intelligible vocals and Randall’s distorted, archaic sounding drums.
This remarkable construction is located in the Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi and is built entirely from scratch every year. It features 10,000 tonnes of ice from the nearby Torne River, and 30,000 tonnes of snow, covering more than 30,000 square feet in total. Oh, it even has its own ice chapel. But be sure to bring your winter woollens. It could get a little, errr, chilly at night. Read more
I spent the formative first six years of my life in Wellington, New Zealand, a beautiful windswept city framed by a magnificent harbour in one direction and a stunning collection of green, rolling hills in the other. It was here, on a return visit many years later and deep amongst the clipped accents and ruddy faces of the weather-beaten locals, that I stumbled upon the vast catalogue of the then Dunedin based record label Flying Nun.
