New site features on Lost At E Minor
|Evolution. Where would we be without it? I mean seriously. Probably still hunting for flesh amongst the wreckage of a giant Mammoth. We want to join in on the fun, so we’re evolving too with the addition of a few new site features to help you get more bang for your time. First up, we have a new DRM free music download section in the third column of the site where we post daily MP3s for free download that have been cleared and provided to us by the record labels and band management companies that we work with. There’s a stack of cool tunes there, included amongst them new releases by Alela Diane, Bon Iver, Fujiya & Miyagi, and Jamie Lidell. We update this section regularly, so keep checking in and fattening up your music collection in the process. You can now also scroll through all posts in each category simply by clicking on the orange arrow in the top right-hand corner of the images. So if you click on the arrow on this post, for instance, you’ll be able to scroll through all the websites that we’ve covered on the site. And so on across all the categories on the homepage. This is an easy way for you to navigate through our archives. Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. Los Feliz artist Vanessa Prager has been exhibited at the Robert Berman Gallery, Gallery 1988, and the Santa Monica Museum of Art. Her series, Hunting and Gaming — which opens in LA on January 24th — explores the ‘nature of sinister play’. Prager paints ’starkly-lit scenes of surrealistic moments in daily life; untangling holiday decorations, playing with old toys, driving or chatting. But her odd theatrical arrangements suggest something creepy going on behind the innocent façade’. Read more
On my recent visit to Barcelona, my love for Animal Farm led me to the Plaça de Geroge Orwell. There I discovered Oviso. The tiny café features hand painted walls and low wooden benches, where inhabitants enjoy great coffee for €1 and discuss music, beer, photography and the hordes of tourists that bustle just beyond the quiet square.
Illustrator Hope Gangloff has a stack of her ‘election’ tees from the previous US election available for sale which she created with the talented New York-based artist (and her hubbie, no less!), Ben Degen. Even though they were done to mark Bush’s reappointment, they still kinda sum up her mood on the tussle between Obama and McCain. ‘If the election gets stolen’, she says. ‘What say we burn down the capital instead of blogging about it?’. Hmmm, now there’s an idea.
New York-based Japanese illustrator Yuko Shimizu has been featured on Lost At E Minor several times over the past couple of years. I love the sense of drama her work conveys, the apparent colour clashes that somehow gel despite pre-existing rules about their compatibility. We checked in with her to see what she’s been up to of late: ‘I just came back from a week in Georgian Bay in Canada. No internet, no cell phone reception for a week. It was fantastic! Now I am getting ready for a group show at Visual Arts Gallery in New York that opens in September. I am creating two new 40” x 60” drawings. I’m also slowly refurbishing my website here and there’. I’m totally addicted to a tape I downloaded from Awesome Tapes from Africa by Onipa Nua. The Ghanan street musician has since passed away, but hopefully he’s somewhere smiling knowing that his tunes make me smile as well.
