Loving Lovells Lager
|I’m a big fan of the resurgence of micro-breweries and boutique beers, so I was chuffed when a case of Lovells Lager was dropped off at the Australian Lost At E Minor headquarters. Let’s face it, all free beer tastes good. But Lovells is a really special drop. It has a clean, crisp flavour, and is packed with a malty punch. I dished it out to some friends who dropped in over the week and there’s a glowing consensus that this is one hell of a drink. As the love-child of ARIA award winning producer, Matt Lovell (Silverchair, Eskimo Joe, The Living End) Lovells is aligning itself closely with the Australian music scene. Which seems like a natural fit.

I have a great admiration for hand-screen printing. It reminds me of my days back at college studying art when life was a lot easier and dreams were actually attainable aspirations. Arhhh! Chicago-based Dan Grzeca works with a traditional style of print, designing old-school show posters that are crisp, clean and very appealing. As a child, I took piano exams in over-sized white rooms, on baby grand pianos that felt unfamiliar and echoed strangely as someone across the room observed me in silence. It felt clinical, intimidating and completely devoid of warmth. Last week, I started noticing upright pianos, some painted haphazardly, others respectfully untouched plonked in the most unlikely places throughout Sydney. There was one on the edge of the baby pool at the local swimming pool, with a young girl in a rainbow striped dress tapping out a happy but disjointed melody; another shaded under a tree at the park on the way home. I’m a big fan of Alex Turner’s side project, The Last Shadow Puppets. It’s just really good music. When I first got their record, I didn’t know if it was a re-issue or if it was brand new. It doesn’t sound like a jokey pastiche. It sounds sincere.
