Bloc Party ‘mime’ at MTV

When Bloc Party performed Banquet and Talons at MTV’s Video Music Awards in Brazil, it was very different to their routinely live shows. A last minute backing track request saw the indie heroes perform nothing more than a pantomime. Perhaps it was a ballsy ’screw you MTV’ attack for supporting the myriad of artists who choose to mime. Regardless, I’m absolutely pumped and cannot wait for Bloc Party to grace Australian shores next month.

The best new music I’ve heard recently is coming out of the East Coast. The band Full On is fronted by Shana Falana, who has been part of the music scene for the past decade, with a voice that is both gorgeous and tough. She’ll grab you and pull you in. Rawk on!

The Happy Hollows animated video and giveaway
Directed by Benjamin Hoste, the stop motion animation clip for LA art-rock trio, The Happy Hollows, is accentuated by a barrage of random shapes, a matted water color palate and the occasional splatter of paint. It’s soothing and sumptuous. It’s Zebra by Beach House. The harmonious opening track of Teen Dream is lovely and ridden with reverb. I don’t care if the album was leaked early. These songs will endure the test of time, just like their self-titled album has.

The Knife’s Colouring of Pigeons
Why am I so fond of The Knife’s latest track? Yes, the opera chanting opening takes me down memory lane: reminiscent of Edea’s theme song, reminding me of childhood Final Fantasy VIII playstation days. But ultimately this collaborative effort with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock is ambitiously rich in sparkling percussion and takes the listener on an ethereal journey to Darwinism.

The work of Washington DC-artist Michael Dotson goes a ways to satisfying my insatiable colour sweet tooth. His work makes my eyes light up. Colour aside, Dotson’s cleanly simplified, geometric renderings of various spaces are a treat. Often abstract to the extent that it’s difficult to truly interpret the space, it ultimately leaves the imagination with something to chew on. Read more

I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.
