Marc Jacob’s velvet trimmed pumps

Marc Jacobs’ newly unleashed Autumn 08 collection hit the stage this week and if there is an international designer who I couldn’t appreciate any more, then it’s Marc. His signature patent-leather goods are the apple of my eyes and I think my MJ leather-quilted wallet, stam-bag and ballet mouse flats are being overlooked for Mark Jacob’s freshly launched red velvet trimmed pumps. These shiny patent-leather points feature a luxe velvet trim and lining, finished with a phat chunky heel. Daddy, I want a pair of Marc Jacobs’ heels, and I want them now! Sike. In all seriousness, I’m not petulant that Jacobs hails from the Big Apple and is one of the big cats who also designs for Louis Vuitton. Marc Jacobs is more than a globally affluent brand; his matchless designs speak for themselves.

The Sovereign Beck Silk 2009 collection was conceived with the idea to give a new look to the hand-printed designs of their 2008 Cotton collection. Again collaborating with screen printer Polluted Eyeball, Sovereign Beck have translated four of their favorite patterns onto beautiful hand-picked silks. Limited in quantity to only twenty pieces for each design, every tie is bias cut and hand-stitched in New York City. We have a selection of Sovereign Beck Cotton ties available through our online store.

Loomstate tees

New York-based eco-line Loomstate create the coolest tees made of organic cotton. Each printed t-shirt not only celebrates nature but is stylishly crafted, with contrasting stitching coupled with signature twisted side seams for a sleek fit. My favourite is the Seabra design [pictured below]. And, boys, don’t fret because Loomstate cater for males, too. Read more

Dr Denim’s new male cuts

If jeans were a drug, then Dr Denim’s would indubitably be my drug of choice. But better yet, our favourite Doc’s designs just keep getting cooler and, well … finer. I’m absolutely marvelled by their two latest fits: the Osmond (skinny fit) and Raymond (regular fit). While the Osmond features a bleached down wash in tight fits, the Raymond offers a second-hand look in grey scale denim. Suave, are they not?

A Minute Silence Knitwear

I’ve been stocking up early in preparation for winter, so this debut knitwear line by British label A Minute Silence has arrived with much convenience. The splendid and flamboyantly progressive unisex collection by designer duo Danny Sangra and Lynn Cockburn features wonderfully knitted cardigans, jumpers, socks and even blankets rich in conflicting colours and crazy patterns.

Nathan DeYoung’s Windows and Mirrors

I am in total awe of Nathan DeYoung’s work from late last year titled Windows and Mirrors. This thoughtfully intelligent California-based artist pays particular observation to real life subjects around him, and the result is an inquisitive exploration into the human condition. Through inspirational conjured up characters at the tip of his paint brush, DeYoung is able to project his real life interpretations and analysis of those living around him onto canvas. Impressive, huh?

I love the clean, crisp work of Brooklyn illustrator Jessica Hische. Everything she does seems to possess a delicious, polished perfection. From her beautiful hand drawn type — a specialty — to her simple illustrated imagery, everything just feels so immaculately pulled together.

DJ Spooky — That Subliminal Kid — is just about the deepest crate digger around, trawling the barrels of long-lost record stores for choice vinyl to spin in his wickedly dubby sets. He gave us the inside word last week on his eight favourite songs right now via our sister website, My Secret Playlist. This is what he had to say about Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s Panic in Babylon: ‘If there’s anything that the twenty-first century has told us, it’s that dub is the real original hip-hop. Lee Scratch even had to make it clear in 1965 by adding “Scratch” to his middle name. Take that, Grandmaster Flash!’ Read the rest of DJ Spooky’s Secret Playlist.

Austin-based photographer William Hundley loves juxtaposing completely absurd and unrelated objects. Whether it’s fabric-draped people in mid jump or chihuahuas and Easter Island heads standing on cheeseburgers, Hundley takes an almost Dadaist joy in making random, giddily puzzling images. Despite the intentions of many, it’s not so often that advertising — as an industry — truly thinks outside the box. Yet, when executed well, clever eye-catching advertising actually works. It does. As these examples will attest to. Read more
