by I caught this Argentinean musician play in a church in London last Sunday evening, and as the first few bars echoed around the hall, I couldn’t really think of a better way to finish off the week. The sound and the setting were seamlessly joined at the hip, as if she alone took the place of the hordes of choristers that normally fill the church. Molina has mastered the art of looping and layering, both vocally and instrumentally, and so her and the two backing musicians treat their audience to a sound that is almost orchestral in its size. Yet the music is somehow still very soporific, low key and, ultimately, unusual. She’s not bent on melody — it may not be immediately accessible given the very deliberate lack of poppy hooks in the music — but draws the listener into a trance-like state through repetition and the absence of any climax. The performances are quite mesmerising; perfect for those looking to lose themselves for a bit.

Argentine photographer Irina Werning has complied this beautiful and poignant collection of portraits of adults re-enacting images of themselves as kids. From what I gather, she has asked people to submit photographs of themselves and then returned with them to these same spots at the same times in their lives. She’ll take this project round the world, from Baghdad to Eurodisney, and is looking for willing participants. Read more
Bug fighting in South East Asia
Of all the little idiosyncratic activities I’ve come across since living in Southeast Asia, this nears the favourite. The bug fights are held in a cemetery about half an hour outside of Chiang Mai late in the year when the stags are at their randiest. It pulls an impressive crowd who bet some hefty dollars on the winner, claimed by the beetle who throws its opponent off the revolving log and struts (or crawls) to victory. Read more

When you first hear William Elliot Whitmore’s voice, it’s hard to believe he isn’t a grizzled old man. The baritone-voiced one-man-band does rousing bar room ballads on the banjo and guitar that are sure to send shivers down your spine. On closer listen, Whitmore’s voice does seem slightly affected. But like Tom Waits before him, his voice is likely to age like a good scotch.

The return of the Brionvega rr226
Italian brand Brionvega has resurrected the classy Radiofonografio piece first created in 1965. The updated version is just like the original turntable/radio unit, but also has a CD/DVD player.
Pitched as ‘Ulterior Motives in Contemporary Art’, Disorder Disorder is running until November 14 at Penrith Regional Gallery. It’ll be well worth the trip out west of Sydney: the Australian, Japanese, American and European cast reads like a warriors of street art roundup and includes Mike Giant, Ed Templeton, Anthony Lister [artwork above], Ozzie Wright, and Jonathan Zawada.
