Katy Horan
I’ve long been a fan of Brooklyn artist Katy Horan. With a folksy old west, native american aesthetic, Horan creates paintings rich with narrative, like old campfire stories, come to life. Having recently opened her first solo show at the Anno Domini Gallery in San Jose, Horan has created a haunting new body of work filled with abstract lacy patterns and narratives that will most definitely hit your storytime sweet spot.

Brooklyn-based illustrator Aya Kakeda has used a wide range of materials for her Yoshitomo Nara-esque images, but there’s something particularly compelling about her embroidered work. The constraints and distortions inherent in the medium suggests a struggle and a roughness not apparent in her other work and fits nicely with some of her folky subject matter and child-like narratives. Henry Darger art book by Klaus Biesenbach
I’ve been intrigued with Henry Darger’s work since seeing the excellent documentary, In the Realms of the Unreal, a few years ago. Darger epitomizes the “outsider artist” due to the fact that he worked as a janitor up until his retirement and his paintings were not found until after his death. Maybe that’s why this new book, Henry Darger by Klaus Biesenbach, and his paintings in general feel like a lost treasure. Read more
As a long time fan of the folksy paintings of artist Keith Shore, I was really happy to hear from him that he’s just updated his site with some amazing new paintings. I can never get enough of the loose, dreamy way that he treats his subject matter, as well as the medium in general. In fact, several of these paintings will be dressing the set of the upcoming movie, The Beaver, starring Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster. I’ve never been a huge Mel Gibson fan, but I might have to check this one out. Read more

Despite his name, I’m guessing German illustrator Frederik Jurk must be a cool guy because his images, his limited palette and gorgeous textured line work are awesome.
I was immediately taken with the work of California artist Zack Paul. Especially the images created on various bits of driftwood and found natural objects. The most perfect backdrop to his clean, geometric images.
Stumbling across the comics of artist Vanessa Davis just made my day. Her personal meanderings and sketchy style just make me want to read every little thing I can get my hands on. I especially enjoy the memior-esque series she’s been creating for Tablet Mag. I can’t think of any better way to procrastinate on a weekday afternoon.

When you first see The Gershwin Hotel, you might think it’s an art gallery or a public art installation.
