Micah P. Hinson takes the good with the bad
by We said a few weeks back that Micah P. Hinson is ‘like every rustic, broken down, and pieced back together country great that’s ever been. Only hipper and slightly less sombre’. With that in mind, we spoke to him recently and asked him whether his hometown of Texas was a difficult place for a young, aspiring musician to grow up in: ‘The boredom of Abilene [Texas] helped the creativity. There wasn’t much to do to fill a person’s time, so you had to find ways of filling it. So as far as music, this was helpful. But regarding other extralegal activities, it was not so helpful. But you know, you take the good with the bad, mix it up, and see what pops out’.
How did your experiences there shape your songwriting and would you have been as successful a songwriter, do you think, if you hadn’t gone through the dramas of your late teen years?
‘I’m not sure how to really answer this one. It goes back to the question of whether hard times are important to songwriting. I firmly believe that it is not necessary to the process. Yeah, it helps, but surely if I hadn’t caused all that hell, music still would have come. It just would’ve come from a different angle’.
Any music right now that’s really exciting you – bands, producers or songwriters?
‘Hmmm, the only thing new that I’m excited about is the Glasgow band, The Twilight Sad. Other than that, I’m at a loss’.
How quick/slow was the writing process for [new album] Micah P. Hinson and the Red Empire Orchestra?
‘The songwriting process took about the same as it always does. It usually takes about the span of a year to write, record, and then prepare for a release. It’d probably take a shorter amount of time, but between albums they keep me so busy with the road that I can’t focus on much anything else’.
Are you still enjoying listening to it or have you moved on from it already?
‘I listen to my albums every so often. I listen to them so much during the recording process, that by the end, my ears generally tire of them. It’s good this way, though, ’cause it always sounds like magic to go back to’.

Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

Oh boy, this is fun. Omaha’s Tilly and the Wall are kitsch-cool-camp-vauderville meets pop-folk-flamenco, with a tap dancer for a drummer and some serious, serious charisma for a calling card.
The Suit Up exhibition comprises a number of artworks from various Australian street, comic, and illustration artists, each of whom has applied their unique style to that ubiquitous — yet, rarely tapped — canvas, the playing card. The designs have been produced as giclee prints, signed and numbered by the artists, and are limited to 10 prints of each design. Real-size decks of cards have also been produced for sale. The Suit Up crew is a close-knit group of predominantly Melbourne-based artists who are passionate about Australia’s ‘low-brow’ art scene, which is more collaborative and less ego-driven than much of the the high-brow art world. The exhibition runs between February 13 and 25.
Grace is part of a new series of books by author Dale Cusack. The story chronicles the lives of Grace and her feline companion Boot in their struggle to fight the evil Drawl and the cover illustration was done by Auckland-based artist, and Lost At E Minor contributor, Dennis Juan Ma. We asked him about what shaped the colour choices for the piece: ‘I wanted to create a mystery world within the reality. I wanted the colour to encourage readers to stimulate their imagination. I illustrated the covers with a classical Japanese wood block look to show the oriental flavour of the cat’s world. And it just happens that I’m a wood block art fan’. Read more
The latest project of former punk rock drummer Andreas Asingh from Copenhagen, I literally stumbled across Small through my participation at the By:Larm music conference in Oslo. As one of the many up-and-coming bands in Denmark, their sound is a cross between M83, Remote, and Giorgio Moroder; captivating and adventurous, and full of strong melodies.
