This is Mike Bertino and his work absolutely wonderful. He’s got this original, almost lo-fi Tim Biskup thing going on and it makes me really want to grab a beer with him. I love when artists give their pieces names like Knuckle Inferno and Man Beard. It just makes them that much better. He keeps a blog where he publishes his latest work and lets you know where they’re available for purchase, so go check it out. I think I’m going to ask him to be my BFF. Well, at least one of them. Not the only one. Cause, you know … I have more than one.

Swedish-born Linn Olofsdotter has not only moved around the world, she’s also shifted her career from graphic design to motion graphics, before working as a senior art director at a Boston advertising agency. Polina Zioga’s piece Under the Surface interrupted my Wednesday afternoon doldrums, consisting of mind-numbing admin duties that creep up on you after weeks of neglect, and swept me off to a land where I became a Mermaid. A Mermaid Princess, if you will. In this beautiful underwater world that I created in my mind, I have all the state of the art materials to show off my new cloister. The pink seaweed marsh that I welcome my honorary fishy friends to swim through when entering the grounds is made of a fine material that comes from the Indian Ocean region, where the coral reefs are considered gold. It’s been a rather long time since I’ve said ‘wow’ at anything on this orgy called the internet, but his work is seriously wowful and engaging. While watching a clip of Stage One being set up at the Guggenheim, people call him the greatest artist of this decade and all you have to do is look at his work to agree. Read more
The work of Joshua Ben Long can be found in the fantastical place called Longoland. His bizarre take on objects totally brings the madness from the dark left part of my brain. It makes me want to offer up ice cream to children that are screaming for it wildly like baby birds, then take it back and devour it while laughing maniacally. His plushes are truly brilliant. I’d really like to see his work mass produced and start breaking into the vinyl scene. Maybe some 3″ blind assortments, eh? Read more
I’ve had a crush on Ashley Wood’s work for years now and the packaging art for the new Bertie variant, Dirty Deeds, is incredible. It’s an exciting addition to the WWR series, due out in April. Each one produced will be hand-painted and detailed with accessories and have 43 points of articulation. I seriously can’t wait to get one on my shelf. The packaging alone will be worth buying. Clothing designer, artist and teacher, Howard Tangye gives us a cool look at models. The etched lines draw out a specific moment in time and the eyes seem to be sharing a conversation, listening to someone go on. You can almost predict what they are about to say, responding to you in a manor of compassion, yet keeping their guard up at the same time. His work is a combination of judgment, humanity and fabulous-ness dawwwling. He also puts these images on T-shirts, I am off to purchase one tomorrow. Where you ask? He gave us the inside word last week on his eight favourite songs right now via our sister website, My Secret Playlist. This is what he had to say about Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s Panic in Babylon: ‘If there’s anything that the twenty-first century has told us, it’s that dub is the real original hip-hop. Adult Hotel opens in Nanning, China
State-controlled news outlet Xinhua reports that a new ‘adult hotel‘ is opening in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Province in southern China. Apparently state censors think homosexuals and tattoo parlors sully their nation’s image, but not establishments aimed at facilitating heterosexual unions. The owner is apparently worried his business will be perceived as a brothel. Hmmm. In any case, the photos of a staff member demonstrating the, uh, equipment is caption-worthy for sure.

Florida-based artist, Andy Espinoza, studies at the Ringling College of Art and Design, majoring in Illustration. His paintings are beautifully conceptualised, rich in narrative and technically impressive. Of his work, he says: ‘I see each human figure as a unique challenge. I am coaxed to find the unique relationship between the shapes and tones that give the particular subject its subtle appeal and unrepeatable vitality. My paintings are not photographic representations of my subjects, but rather are my elaboration of what I find to be of value in them’. Read more
