Kako Uedo

Remember in fourth grade, how proud you were when you cut a snowflake out of construction paper that actually looked like a snowflake, and all the other kids ooed and aahed over your achievement? Sorry, but Kako Uedo kicks your nine-year-old ass.

Youngna Park

It takes an alert photographer to capture no-frills, naturalistic images such as those by Brooklyn-based Youngna Park. There’s an honesty about her work that’s refreshing amid the highly-produced, big-budget styles and the overly-stylized hipster verite that abounds these days.

Petra Cortright

While Petra Cortright’s irreverent new media work that incorporates animated gifs and tacky web symbols and emoticons is generally amusing, her series Portraits II is particularly amazing, the digitally smeared images becoming beautiful still-lifes and haunting portraits that truly transcend their source photos. Christine Young’s work looks like doodles in a high-school student’s Trapper Keeper. She definitely got a lot from doing blind contour exercises in art class.

The man who brought us the masterpiece, For Emma, Forever Ago, is soon to release the follow-up EP, Blood Bank. Given the staggering acclaim For Emma received, his approach to the release must have been a nervous one, weighed down by the expectations of an entire music industry and its league of followers. Blood Bank is no disappointment, though: he calls it a ‘palette cleanser’ after For Emma, and it continues its themes of wintery isolation and introspection. The harmonies on tracks like Beach Baby are beautiful, and the production equally exquisite.

The work of French Illustrator Chamo is every bit as fun as her name seems to imply. Employing a bright, candy colored, retro feel, Chamo’s illustrations come off feeling like the ultimate feel good joyride.

Improv Everywhere strikes again with a spontaneous musical in a Los Angeles mall. Wireless microphones hooked up to the mall’s PA system ensured the feeding masses didn’t slip into Cinnabon-induced comas until after the show was over. Note especially the angry dude in sunglasses at about 2:51 — apparently he thinks nothing can ever top Rent.

While Flushing is still the place to go for the best Chinese food in New York City, those for whom the hour-long subway ride on the 7 is simply out of the question on most nights can now get their mapo tofu fix right in Manhattan. While the masses queue out the door at Joe’s Shanghai across the street, Famous Sichuan offers real-deal Sichuanese food such as cold sliced beef tendon in chili sauce, braised fish fillet with napa cabbage and roasted chili, and the most delicious cumin lamb this side of the East River.
