I’m very happy having recently stumbled across the work of French illustrator Gwenola Carerre. It sort of makes me think Russian Constructivism meets children’s books. Throw in Carerre’s fun sense of storytelling and textured sense of design, coupled with her glorious type, and you’ve got a pretty special viewing experience.

My buddy Evah Fan just came back from her big show in Paris and it seems she made some pretty exciting discoveries while there, most notably the French artist Isabelle Boinot. It takes a good deal of clicking through her site to get your bearings, but once you manage to stumble into her main portfolio, the pastel tapestry of thumbnails greets you like an Easter egg hunt. Each image is a relatively simple vignette conveying some abstract concept, but it’s still that initial, coalescing view that really gets me.

Despite his name, I’m guessing German illustrator Frederik Jurk must be a cool guy because his images, his limited palette and gorgeous textured line work are awesome.
I was immediately taken with the work of California artist Zack Paul. Especially the images created on various bits of driftwood and found natural objects. The most perfect backdrop to his clean, geometric images.

Marcos Chin and I share a studio and we are loving the Cubits and Cubitec shelving system from Design Within Reach, which we first saw at Mirko Ilic’s studio and then had to buy them ourselves. It’s smart, light and can be custom built to the shape you like. The vivid colours make our workspace a lot of fun!

When I went to see Gene Wilder speak, all the know-alls in the audience kept asking questions, not to find out anything, but just to show off to the room how much they knew about film making. Last week when the 2008 ARIA nominations were released, I was so happy to see the recognition of Melbourne’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Their album Primary Colours is pure, unadulterated Aussie rock, standing out from the numerous electro releases we’ve had this year. The band manages to capture that wonderful pub-vibe without any pretension or tragic nostalgia. Primary Colours speaks to people who still seek an existence that is all about wearing ripped jeans, loitering and punching people in the face … not in a violent way, but because your fist flailed in that direction while you were thrashing around front of stage.
Now you can have your shoes and eat it, thanks to these Jimmy Cheese shoes designed by Bath Spa University fashion student, Lisa Dillon, and made from cheese and bread. It was commissioned by Pilgrims Choice Cheddar. Hmmm, might get a little stinky down there.
