The latest version of the Zune player is a nifty looking thing packed with some features that would make an iPod blush. It’s all about music discovery, and being portable in the process. So with that in mind Zune have added a Buy from FM feature, which allows users to tag and buy music directly from their player from virtually anywhere. If using the radio, you can tag the track to buy later when connected online. If you’re in a wi-fi hot spot, you can buy the track directly to the Zune. Oh, and it comes with Zune Marketplace too so you can buy directly through the store from the palm of your hand. And there’s video games — two of them — which are free with the latest software update. Now, if only the palms of my hands were that much fun.

iPod invented thirty years ago
British inventor Kane Kramer apparently invented a portable, digital music player in 1979, when he was only 23. He was unable to renew his patent after almost a decade of trying to develop the product, and as a result, he will not see a dime from Apple. Poor dude.
Swedish company myFC are working on a fuel cell sticker to charge your portable devices. The prototype is a flexible, 0.11-inch-thick strip that generates 0.9 watts of power at 0.5 volts as long as it is exposed to hydrogen and oxygen in the air. The strip can also be stacked to provide even more power.
Oh damn! We’re digging the latest range of Zune Originals designs which include a Zodiac Series featuring exclusive astrology-themed artwork by Colombian illustrator, Catalina Estrada, and Iosefatu Sua. If illustrators are the new rock stars, then Zune is straddlin’ the best of both worlds. Zune, Zune, indeed.

Question: What do you get if you combine a drumming gorilla (Cadbury), Sony Bravia spots (balls, rabbits, dominos), some slow mo explosions, lots of dancing, and a little piece of the late, great James Brown? Artist Taylor McKimens does paintings you want to poke with a stick, and maybe even sniff, if your friends dared you. With grotesque images of diseased bodies, rotting piles of vomit, intestine-looking tubes, and all manner of scatological subjects rendered in muted pastels, McKimens’ paintings look as if pop culture has been left out of the fridge too long and is sprouting some pretty funky stuff. Wow! So whilst Australia is quickly becoming known for its Ed Banger-styled modular stream of music, there is a little known Brisbane artist called Yeo Choong who is just insanely talented. His music is full of summer fun and Kanye West-Phoenix influences. Take my word on it, this is going to be Australia’s next answer to Sam Sparro, Mika or even Jamie Lidel, and he is only 21 years-old.
Skateboarding is fun. I know this because we have one in our apartment which we use to cruise across the polished floorboards to get from room to room. Though I should acknowledge at this point that I use the term ‘cruise’ liberally. Read more

Mexican architecture firm Senosiain Arquitectos recently designed a shell-shaped dwelling for a Mexico City couple. The owners are already living in their new abode with their two very happy children. The structure is maintenance-free and earthquake proof, and is full of soothing greenery and smooth, rounded surfaces. Read more

The Whitehouse Post is an international post-production company whose projects are damn fine. In fact, they are the scary mix of wit and aesthetics that makes any message convincing. DJ Spooky — That Subliminal Kid — is just about the deepest crate digger around, trawling the barrels of long-lost record stores for choice vinyl to spin in his wickedly dubby sets. He gave us the inside word last week on his eight favourite songs right now via our sister website, My Secret Playlist. This is what he had to say about Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s Panic in Babylon: ‘If there’s anything that the twenty-first century has told us, it’s that dub is the real original hip-hop. Adult Hotel opens in Nanning, China
State-controlled news outlet Xinhua reports that a new ‘adult hotel‘ is opening in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Province in southern China. Apparently state censors think homosexuals and tattoo parlors sully their nation’s image, but not establishments aimed at facilitating heterosexual unions. The owner is apparently worried his business will be perceived as a brothel. Hmmm. In any case, the photos of a staff member demonstrating the, uh, equipment is caption-worthy for sure.
Freelance designer Alex Trochut uses typography, illustration and a solid idea to create works that communicate to each brief. He states that he doesn’t want to choose a particular style but instead enjoys ‘expressing himself and communicating though the needs of every project’. And his formula has worked: his clients include The Guardian G2, Nike Football, and my pencil-case favourite, Faber and Faber.
I like Roots Manuva because he tells stories. I know that sounds simplistic, but honestly, have you noticed how rappers, certainly American rappers, have stopped narrating their lives and are purely focused on how great they are? I know, I know, hip-hop is all about word play, slang, and blah blah blah. Read more
