The Ritz’s The Night of Day
The Ritz is a Chicago-based underground hip-hop duo comprised of Apoc and Rel. For their first full-length album — The Night of Day — they took their inspiration from the themes and aesthetics of 1940s and 50s film noir, with Rel creating a collection of beats that demonstrate his range as a producer. Apoc handles the majority of the rapping, jumping seamlessly from one style to the next as the album shifts tone and tempo.

The battle over copyright laws rages on as the old music industry continues to crumble. Copyright Criminals is a thought-provoking documentary tackling the issue via the controversy of hip-hop and DJ culture. I wonder if the people suing sample artists have thought about the fact that DJs are the primary reason why vinyl is still a viable format, not to mention the fact that they are one of the groups of people still dedicated to buying physical copies of music.
Clipse’s Popular Demand filmed at Obama Fried Chicken
The new video from Virginia Beach hip-hop duo Clipse is pretty amazing in its simplicity, filmed almost entirely at a Brooklyn chicken shack called Obama Fried Chicken (the owner of the establishment unfortunately didn’t allow the name on the awning to be used in the video). Cam’ron’s cameo is particularly great in the song, with him looking more mature and uncle-like than usual.

The Kevin Ayers record Joy of a Toy from 1969 was released by Harvest Records and sits somewhere between Nick Drake and The Byrds. A record slightly ahead of its time, it was filled with enough interesting and clever arrangements and instrumentation to never bore. Girl on a Swing is my favorite tune for the tremolo guitar.
WE'RE POSTING / SOME OF THE BEST
I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.
