I like the understated, almost voyeuristic work of Brookline, Massachusetts photographer Kelly Burgess. She is in her senior year of studies at the Art Institute of Boston.

It takes an alert photographer to capture no-frills, naturalistic images such as those by Brooklyn-based Youngna Park. There’s an honesty about her work that’s refreshing amid the highly-produced, big-budget styles and the overly-stylized hipster verite that abounds these days.
While Petra Cortright’s irreverent new media work that incorporates animated gifs and tacky web symbols and emoticons is generally amusing, her series Portraits II is particularly amazing, the digitally smeared images becoming beautiful still-lifes and haunting portraits that truly transcend their source photos. California’s Cerasoli:LeBasse Gallery has just moved to new digs on Washington Boulevard, Culver City. And to celebrate the re-launch they have an exhibition running featuring the work of Deth P Sun, Mari Inukai [above] and Melissa Haslam, amongst others. This inaugural exhibition, the aptly titled Blender, runs until November 1st.
Chicago’s Cheer Accident started as a post-no-wave weirdo band typical of the Skin Graft roster, but of late, they’ve been doing some unrestrained pop and rock. They even have harmonized vocals and an occasional horn. This isn’t to say they’re commercializing – their songs are just as complex as ever, and there’s still a hint of discordance beneath the shimmering new sound.
