TV
The last time we heard from Melbourne label TV, they were busy preparing for their debut at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. Since then, the girls behind one of this year’s most talked about labels have delivered a stunning collection. All of a sudden it doesn’t matter that winter has only just finished here, we know what we’ll be wearing when the weather heats up. Cute summer one-pieces and statement dresses teamed with suede booties, and if we can get our hands on them, a pair of those hot little dream-catcher specs.

Zanerobe goodies for a fashionable Christmas
We’re buzzed about a few items in particular in the latest range from our friends at aspirational street-wear label, ZANEROBE, who we’ve been fans of since we launched Lost At E Minor back in 2005. Our faves at the moment include the Chuck Navy shorts, with rolled cuff; the Curtis Brown Sunnies, ‘with full rim metal detail in a round vintage frame’; and the Acapulco Navy Tee, with twisted side seams. Stocking fillers? Hell yeah. We’ll take them all for Christmas. ZANEROBE is hanging in the cream of stores, including Australia’s David Jones, Japan’s Barneys, the USA’s Nieman Marcus, Nordstrom and Saks. Or just get into it online. Read more

A few days ago I stumbled across a great new vintage store — Vintage Garage — that has popped up on Smith St, just near the heart of Melbourne’s ‘north side’ grunge fashion area. This cavernous boutique is maze of small dressing rooms brimming with carefully selected and collected vintage clothing and relics. There’s so much to choose from and prices are so reasonable it’s easy to walk out with a basketful of classic tailored jackets, retro high waisted slacks and an antique golden tea set to match. Just eight weeks old, it’s a must see for vintage hunters and gatherers.

I breathed a sigh of relief when I first discovered menswear label, Saint Augustine Academy. Since its inception in 2002, the Sydney-based team have risen to cult-status amongst individuals with a keen eye for sophistication and intelligent design. Playing on the lifestyle of a modern rock and roll star, the designers at Saint Augustine Academy are heavily inspired by the rock nouveau ethos that surrounded bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain. Designers Alvin Manalo and Adrian Amores met in the mid-90s whilst studying economics at Macquarie University (not exactly feeling destined for fashion design). As chief designer, Alvin had no fashion design skills before beginning the label, but has since created consistently contemporary and sought-after designs each season. Read more

Lalesso: ethical, fair-trade fashion from South Africa
It’s nice to know that we’re not the only ones with a warm-weather obsession. Based out of the hottest continent on the planet, African label Lalesso share our ethos for an endless summer and after discovering their current collection, it looks like they’ve found it. Sheepskin boots have been synonymous with surf culture since the seventies, but unfortunately they haven’t had the same associations with style. So when we stumbled across the new shearling booties by California-based footwear label OeTZI3300, we were confused. They may look like the perfect shoe to slip on after a dip in the cold ocean, but there’s nothing slipper-like about them. Made out of the finest sheepskin shearling, these women’s booties have mega long leather laces so you can wear them laced up high or folded down over the ankles. Read more

I was at a creative catch-up night when I met an American man with a small, rectangular suitcase. The size of the suitcase could have held an old Western hand-gun, or perhaps a flute? But it didn’t contain any of the above. It was a small art gallery. Read more

This entertaining documentary follows a group of seemingly clichéd American teenagers in their last year of high school. Through a comprehensive recording of their lives it reminds us that, when examining anything in detail, there is no such thing as a cliché. The naivety and hope of each student shines through, providing a memorable and accurate portrait of a middle-American high school. Read more

Google recently demonstrated their ability to predict flu outbreaks across America weeks in advance of the outbreaks themselves. It would seem that they are more than just a pretty search engine. And as if that wasn’t enough, they’ve now teamed up with Life Magazine, what was the cornerstone of photojournalism for the Twentieth Century, to digitize 95 per cent of their image bank that never saw the light of day. Now millions of photos stretching from the 1750s to the present day are available on Google Images at the click of a button. Read more
One of the most dynamic new acts to burst into our eardrums in years, Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls have just released their debut self-titled album, which combines Phil Spector-ish Wall Of Sound harmonies with fuzzy melodies, as reflected on this track, Where Do You Run To.
