Norwegian designer Oskar Johansen’s entry into the 2008 Peugot Design Contest is every little boy’s dream come true, a sleek hyper-futuristic vehicle that folds in on itself for easy parking, and is powered via lithium batteries that can be recharged via built-in solar cells. All that’s missing is a laser canon.

Let’s face it, who doesn’t want to zip around town in a spankin’ new Mercedes? Well, ok, ok, this is not quite the epic car that saturated my childhood dreams, but it’s eco friendly and fuel efficient and available for around US$12,000. Apparently it comes with an ‘exoskeleton’, for better safety, and a 55 MPG engine. And there’s even a topless model for those convertible lovers. Smart? Yeah, kinda.
Ok, well, we all need to have dreams, and if yours haven’t been that exciting lately, here’s one to wrap your mind around. The Aston Martin One-77 is no mere car, but ‘possibly the world’s most desirable automotive art form’. You want proof? Just look at it! Marek Reichmann and his design team have sculpted the One-77 so that it is still instantly recognisably an Aston Martin, but with hints of a new design language. Aston’s silver door handles and familiar rear lights feature, while the rear haunches are voluptuous and the six-spoke wheels hide huge ceramic brakes. Aston Martin CEO Ulrich Bez has confirmed that power will come from an artfully-crafted derivative of the company’s existing 6-liter V12, bored and stroked to 7 liters and producing somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque. Winnipeg Illustrator Kenneth Lavalee makes some lovely work. His delicate linework, muted colors and twisted tongue in cheek, drama-esque themes (all blood, obesity and creepy little lump people) are certainly worth a good look.
Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Set in the 1980s, We Own The Night shows a real nostalgia for that period — particularly in the costumes. Read more
The Suit Up exhibition comprises a number of artworks from various Australian street, comic, and illustration artists, each of whom has applied their unique style to that ubiquitous — yet, rarely tapped — canvas, the playing card. The designs have been produced as giclee prints, signed and numbered by the artists, and are limited to 10 prints of each design. Real-size decks of cards have also been produced for sale. The Suit Up crew is a close-knit group of predominantly Melbourne-based artists who are passionate about Australia’s ‘low-brow’ art scene, which is more collaborative and less ego-driven than much of the the high-brow art world. The exhibition runs between February 13 and 25.

When you first hear William Elliot Whitmore’s voice, it’s hard to believe he isn’t a grizzled old man. The baritone-voiced one-man-band does rousing bar room ballads on the banjo and guitar that are sure to send shivers down your spine. On closer listen, Whitmore’s voice does seem slightly affected. But like Tom Waits before him, his voice is likely to age like a good scotch.
