His name is Moofus, watch him draw

Oh man! This kid is amazing. And when I say kid, I mean kid. Moofus is eleven years old, lives in my hometown of Sydney, and is still at school. In his own words, ‘my mum and dad won’t let me leave school to get a proper job as I won’t fit up chimneys anymore. So I draw lots of pictures’. Every month he gives a percentage of the sales of his drawings to charity. This month it’s going to International Animal Rescue. The artworks themselves could be collectors items one day. The kid has real talent.

Jane Abma

Sydney-based illustrator and designer, Jane Abma, has recently set up her own design studio — 1000 Words — and is keeping herself busy with a variety of interesting projects. I caught up with her to chat about her studio and her work routine: What time of day do you feel the most creative? ‘It totally depends on the amount of Zs I get, but usually first thing in the morning or quite late at night. Most of my ideas come about when I’m lying in bed trying to get to sleep’. Read more

Joanna Newsom’s new single 81

81 is the first released track from Joanna Newsom’s forthcoming triple album Have One On Me. I had the pleasure of hearing the live preview on Joanna’s birthday at Sydney’s Opera House and was so delighted by this angelic songstresses’ gentle vocals and superhuman harp playing ability. Milan is one of the most talented children I know. He goes to school with my son. I am frequently awestruck by his ability. I hope he remembers me when he’s rich!

The people on Unhappy Hipsters sure do look lonely in their beautifully designed habitats, but I’m even more confused by what people mean when they use the term ‘hipster‘ — do hipsters wear sandals and khaki shorts? I’m not sure hipsters can even afford Dwell-worthy homes, let alone maintain their minimalist decor. Read more

My friend Lenka Kripac, formerly of Aussie group Decoder Ring, now flying solo, has just released her debut single — The Show — and it’s as catchy a slice of pop hedonism as you’re ever going to hear. Be warned: one listen and you may never shake the melody.
