Rob Bridges
I like the earthy realism of illustrator Rob Bridges’ work. Of his work, he says: ‘From my earliest memory, I have always drawn. As a child in school I never liked to read. My father and teacher’s remedy was to draw pictures on the inside flaps of my school books. Somehow this was meant to boost my interest in reading. Yet, it created a child who took great pleasure drawing on the inside flaps of all my father’s books and papers’.
‘Since then, I have worked in some visual atmosphere or other, graduating from Seattle’s Cornish College of the Arts with a BFA and working as a senior creative in a design firm. These days i live in Los Angeles. I like rabbits and mochi ice cream. Yet, I sometimes wonder if one day I will end up having children who will draw pictures on the inside flaps and pages of all my books. Such is life’.

This clip had such an impact on me when it first came out, back in the day. There’s just something so poignant about the idea that some people you pass on the street everyday have a little bit more insight into their world — our world — than we could ever imagine. It’s beautiful and confronting, and it’s all set to the most wonderfully evocative music.

Philly indie rock group Dr Dog recently compiled a crackling Secret Playlist for us which included props for songs by Cass McCombs, Thunderclap Newman, and the new time rag star, A.A Bundy, about whose track, Vice Rag, keyboardist Zach Miller wrote: ‘Good enough to be a classic old timey melody, except with more contemporary lyrical vices added. UK-based one-man-band Sieben has a new album out: As They Should Sound. Frontman Matt Howden builds songs with a loop pedal and a violin, which he uses for rhythm and melody. His sound is wonderfully sophisticated and cabalistic, with a particularly British sense of lyricism.

Sao Paulo designer Andreia Chaves created these extraordinary ‘invisible shoes‘, which are made from a ‘faceted mirrored surface allowing the shoe to reflect different angles of the environment around it thus camouflaging itself with its surroundings’. Read more
